Unlock skills for cheaper in Umamusume: Pretty Derby by maximizing skill hints from Support Cards events, Legacies, and training.

Skills are force multipliers that can turn the tide of a race in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Every character has an inherent unique skill and a few innate skills, which they can obtain by spending skill points (SP). However, the majority of skills are unlocked through skill hints, which are primarily provided by Support Cards.
A single hint discounts the skill’s SP cost by 10%. If the same hint is provided twice, the cost is discounted by 20%. The discount caps at 40% if four duplicate hints are received. Therefore, getting more hints is beneficial not only to access a greater variety of skills, but also to learn them for less SP.
Increasing Skill Hints in Umamusume: Pretty Derby
The straightforward way to receive skill hints is to train the stat with a red “!” icon on it, as it guarantees a skill hint. The exclamation mark indicates that training with the Support Card will give you a hint. The skill unlocked will be among those listed on the Support Card’s skill tab.
Upgrade and Uncap Support Cards

Upgrading Support Cards generally increases the frequency and skill hints provided by them. In addition to providing more hints, the card will also have a greater chance of giving multiple skill hints in a single event.
Upgrade the Support Card by heading to:
- Enhance > Support Cards > Level Up
Spend Support Points (SP) to upgrade the cards in your deck to their maximum. To unlock their higher levels, uncap the card by going to:
- Enhance > Support Cards > Uncap
Spending a single duplicate of your Support Card uncaps it by one level (out of four total). Uncapping a card also increases the resource cost of leveling it up, so make sure to max their levels before uncapping.
- Note: Any Support Card upgrades made during an ongoing career will only take effect once a new career begins.
Legacies

Legacies can pass down skill hints through Green Sparks. Only three-star characters can generate Green Sparks to pass down their unique skills through Legacy. If you don’t have two veteran umas with Green Sparks, try to find one through the “Recommendations” tab in the “Friends” menu.
Focus Training
Most Support Cards have an event or two that can provide skill hints. The skills unlocked through these hints cannot be seen on the “Skills” tab of the card and aren’t unlocked through training. Head over to the “Events” tab and select “i” to check these skills. You will have to concertedly train with the Support Card if you want to trigger the event and unlock this skill.
