Learn more about the new Pokemon TCG expansion Mega Evolution as well as stuff like its release date, what cards players can expect, and more

The latest expansion of the Pokemon TCG, Mega Evolution, will be arriving in stores worldwide on September 26, 2025. This marks the first time Mega Pokemon returns to the Trading Card Game since the Sun and Moon set Cosmic Eclipse in 2019. These cards will be available for purchase in the form of Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Packs, and other similar collections.
Additionally, before it is released physically, players will be able to try out these cards on the Pokemon TCG Live app (available on iOS and Android) on September 25, 2025.
Pokemon TCG Mega Evolution: How Will These Cards Work?

Mega Pokemon ex are expected to have high HP and powerful attacks compared to other Pokemon cards. However, as a means to balance them, if they are KO’d by a player, they will get to take three Prizes. This makes using these cards a high-risk, high-reward proposition for anyone willing to try them out.
Interestingly, there has been a mechanical change in how Mega Evolution will now work in the Pokemon TCG. Previously, if a Pokemon underwent Mega Evolution, the player’s turn would immediately end (this could be worked around with Spirit Link Pokemon Tool cards). However, in the new Mega Evolution expansion, they can appear as Basic, Stage 1, or Stage 2 Pokemon without requiring an extra Evolution step. For example, Mega Lucario ex can evolve directly from Riolu, instead of Lucario. This will make deck building around these cards a smoother process.
