Learn how to obtain the Nightmare Orb in Diablo 4 Season 9, a Legendary Arcana that grants a Fear effect to your Catalyst.
Catalysts, Infusions, and Arcana are the three core components of the Horadric Spellcraft system introduced in Season 9: Sins of the Horadrim. This system allows players to create customized spells by experimenting with different effects. While Catalysts and Infusions determine the base power and elemental damage of the spell, Arcana provide additional effects and buffs.
Nightmare Orb is one of the five Legendary Arcana for Horadric Spells. It excels in crowd control by instilling the Fear effect, which can disrupt or separate enemies. As a Legendary Arcana, it also grants unique effects for each of the five Catalysts.

How To Obtain Nightmare Orb in Diablo 4
Although the seasonal questline unlocks Catalysts and Infusions as you progress, that is not the case for Arcana. You can only obtain Arcana like Nightmare Orb randomly by completing Horadric Strongrooms and opening the reward chest. Also, note that you must reach Rank 6 Horadric Knowledge to acquire Nightmare Orb as a reward.
How To Use Nightmare Orb in Diablo 4
There are three different tiers of Arcana: Magic, Rare, and Legendary. Among them, the Legendary variants provide unique effects for each Catalyst. The Nightmare Orb grants a specialized Fear effect for your Catalyst for 4 seconds, which will also increase by +0.4 seconds for each rank. When combined with different Catalysts, the Nightmare Orb provides the following effects:
- Celestial Surge: Stars Fear on unaffected enemies for 4 seconds. Additionally, there is a 50% chance for another star to fall once the Fear ends.
- Disintegrate: While inflicting Fear on unaffected enemies, it deals 100% increased damage to them as long as the status is active.
- Propulsion: It removes enemy Vulnerability to inflict Fear. Additionally, Feared enemies form Lesser Mana Blasts randomly.
- Astral Pillar: It inflicts Fear on every 9th wave. Nearby enemies are Taunted, removing their Fear.
- Cosmic Anomaly: Anomalies Fear and unaffected enemies come into contact and apply a 90% slow for 4 seconds.
You can use Horadric Phials at the Horadric Spellcraft menu to upgrade Nightmare Orb Arcana up to Rank 5.
