Unfortunately, the game will not be compatible with the original Nintendo Switch console. This is mostly due to being held back by the console’s hardware. It is unlikely that the game will be ported to the Switch 1 in the future, if that is the case.

However, in a recent Q&A session, the developer released some details about the game originally being designed for the Switch 1. We also have access to some images that show how the game would have looked on the handheld.

The producer, Kenta Motokura, answered many questions regarding Donkey Kong Bananza in Chapter 2 of Volume 19, Ask the Developer. Here, he answered that they were considering the technical enhancements that could be done for the Switch 2 version of the game.

They were able to add far more objects to the environment than before for the Switch 2 version. More objects meant that you could interact with and destroy significantly more items than before. This enhanced the experience of the game entirely and convinced the team that making the game for the Switch 2 would be the right decision.

Moreover, the original Switch console simply did not have the memory available to handle the load of the game. Due to these factors, the game was only released for the Nintendo Switch 2.
