The latest and ninth addition to Destiny 2, Edge of Fate, has been released on July 15, 2025. The story of the campaign is immersive, with an intriguing plot and brilliant twists.

However, the ending might feel overwhelming. There are details that can be easily missed. In this article, we’ll discuss the ending of Destiny 2 Edge of Fate and provide a comprehensive backstory.

An Overview of the Campaign in Destiny 2 Edge of Fate

To begin, the Nine manipulated events and time to bring everyone here. Human Ikora existed before the Golden Age. The Nine caused her demise by hitting her with a train. Then she was made a Guardian.

Moreover, the Nine pulled Loi through time and brought him here as their new Emissary. Additionally, The Guardian has been hinted to be a weapon of The Nine. That story is yet to play out.

We were called to Kepler by a member of the Nine known as III (three). III was once connected to the Earth and its gravity.

We fight through Fallen Exiles, who use dark matter and worship an entity named Giver. Later, we discover that III and Giver are the same entity.

The Conductor aka Maya Sunderash

Moreover, we catch a glimpse of Maya Sundaresh, who took the power of an Echo after the final shape, and after some events on Nessus, she escaped with it. Maya has the power to compel and control beings. Maya wanted to create a new golden age, where everything is converted into Vex. Additionally, she wanted to search through time to find her lost lover Chioma, but in the end was blinded by vanity.

During the Edge of Fate, the Conductor is back. Her Vex are here on the planet, and we learn more about her next goals, or some of them. According to Ikora, she will drag the past to us if she must. The Conductor is aware of the immense power of The Nine.

Maya tried to meet with III in the hopes of finding a way to reverse time. This has been implied throughout the campaign, but there might be another reason for Maya’s desire. The Nine has partial control over time. They can bring objects to the present, but they can’t send objects back in time. The Conductor wanted to make a bargain with III. However, that seems to be impossible

During a mission, Maya told us she concluded her business in Keplar and the Guardian would play out the rest. During that same mission, Lodi says that three is silent and shows him some bizarre visions of the Collapse.

The Ending of Destiny 2 Edge of Date Explained

In the ending cutscene, we see Maya pulling III into our dimension. III dies following this event. Subsequently, this likely took place either earlier in the campaign or maybe even before Kepler. We see Maya and Lodi, but they can be from different times. In the cutscene, Maya speaks to III and says, “If you cannot give me what I want, what can you do? You are a being who bends all rules. Why do you fear breaking this one?”

III seemingly doesn’t grant her wish. There is a chance it did something else in the background.

Maya pulls it into our dimension, instantly killing it because The Nine cannot exist here. Hence, we see its dead body floating out there in space.

We then see the current event with our Guardian. Drifter uses the hall to revive III, and it delivers a final message to Lodi. III states that its death at the hands of Maya triggered universal extinction, and the only way to stop it is to bind the nine together.

So, the story of Destiny 2 has taken an interesting turn. A new saga might introduce something completely different in the Destiny universe. The members of the Nine have been pulling some of these strings. They clearly have a goal for the Guardian.

Moreover, The Conductor seems to have some ulterior motive. Was her goal simply to try and bring the Golden Age here into our current timeline? Or is she seeking something else?

She claims that her job here is done. So, it seems she achieved something she wanted.
