Although not as flashy as Speed skills, passive skills can provide a significant advantage in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Passive skills provide a permanent buff to stats as long as their respective conditions are met. The ease of achieving these conditions largely determines the value of the skill.

While passive skills aren’t considered optimal in most builds, they can shore up lacking stats to provide an edge to your uma. Knowing the best ones to pick can add to a trainee’s capabilities when there are few choices available.

Umamusume Pretty Derby: Top 5 Passive Skills

Each entry includes the base cost of the skill, followed by its effect and the Support Cards that provide hints for it. Some of the Support Cards offer hints for the skills during events rather than through training. These skills have a relatively low base cost and provide even greater value when discounted with skill hints.

5) Pace Chaser Savvy

  • Base Cost: 110 (upgradable)
  • Effect: +40 Wit, +5 Field of View
    • After upgrade: +60 Wit, +10 Field of View
  • Support Cards: SR Hishi Amazon

An innate skill of Taiki Shuttle, ‘Pace Chaser Savvy,’ provides increased Wit and field of view if the uma is using the Pace Chaser running style. ‘Late Surger Savvy’ is similarly useful for its corresponding strategy. An increased field of view is especially important for Pace Chasers and Late Surgers to avoid being blocked while making their way to the front of the pack.

4) Right-Handed

  • Base Cost: 90
  • Effect: +40 Speed
    • After upgrade: +60 Speed
  • Support Cards: SSR Fine Motion, SR Matikanefukukitaru

‘Right-Handed’ improves the Speed stat by 40 on clockwise races. Roughly two-thirds of the races featured in the game go clockwise around the track. While still not very reliable, the skill is good to have if you find yourself with the option to pick it from among other passive skills at the end of the career.

3) Standard Distance

  • Base Cost: 90
  • Effect: +40 Stamina
  • Support Cards: SSR Nishino Flower, SSR El Condor Pasa, SR Eishin Flash

‘Standard Distance’ improves Stamina by 40 when the race’s length is in multiples of 400m. The majority of race lengths are in multiples of 400m, allowing the skill to trigger regularly. Invest in the skill to supplement Stamina, especially while building an uma for Medium or Long distances.

2) Firm Conditions

  • Base Cost: 90 (upgradable)
  • Effect: +40 Power
    • After upgrade: +60 Power
  • Support Cards: SSR Rice Shower, SSR Winning Ticket, SSR Super Creek, SSR Nishino Flower, SSR Satano Diamond, SR Meisho Doto, SR King Halo

‘Firm Conditions’ increases Power when the track’s surface is “Firm.” This is one of the most reliable passive skills to use, as Turf tracks have the “Firm” condition unless the weather adds moisture to it.

A good way to round out ‘Firm Conditions’ is by purchasing ‘Wet Conditions.’ This will ensure your uma has +40 Power regardless of the track’s condition. We do not recommend upgrading ‘Firm Conditions’ as it will only provide an additional 20 Power for nearly the same base cost. Invest in the upgrade only if no other options are available.

1) Lone Wolf

  • Base Cost: 70
  • Effect: +40 Speed
  • Support Cards: SSR Mejiro Palmer, SSR Sweep Tosho, SR Narita Taishin

‘Lone Wolf’ has a lower base cost than all other skills on this list and boosts the all-important Speed stat. The skill only activates if no other uma has learnt ‘Lone Wolf.’ However, most players refrain from spending SP on passive skills, so you’ll primarily have to keep track of whether any of your other team members in the same racing category have the skill already.
