Discover how to obtain the legendary Tanuki pet in Grow a Garden and enhance your gardening experience with this helpful companion.

The Zen Update went live on July 19, 2025, in Grow a Garden. It added several new things to the Roblox experience, including new seeds, a mutation, an egg, and six new pets. This includes the legendary-tier Tanuki pet that can help your garden with a lot of different things. This article will go over the steps you need to follow to obtain the Tanuki pet, along with an explanation of what it does.
Grow a Garden Tanuki Pet Guide: How To Get

The Zen Update in Grow a Garden is inspired by Japanese culture, and the pets added with the update are references to creatures of folklore as well. The Tanuki in the game resembles the Raccoon’s model. Currently, the only way you can obtain it is by hatching a Zen Egg. The egg can be bought from the Zen Shop with 30 Chi.
Follow these steps to access the Zen Shop:
- Launch Grow a Garden
- Talk to the Tanuki NPC in the Zen event area at the center of the map
- Select the first option, which reads ‘Show me the Zen Shop’
Players have a 20% chance to hatch the Zen Egg into a Tanuki. Which means you may need to hatch multiple eggs till you get one. Also, the Zen Shop might not have the egg in stock. So, we will need to either pay Sheckles to restock or wait for the timer.
What Does the Tanuki Pet Do in Grow a Garden?
The Tanuki are gods of mischief in Japanese folklore. Befittingly, the pet’s main trait in the game is also Mischief. Every 10 minutes that the pet is equipped in your garden, the pet will do any one of these actions:
- Gain extra experience
- Gives a random fruit one of these mutations:
- Chocolate
- Moonlit
- Chilled
- Gives you around 1,000 Sheckles
- Duplicates a random player’s fruit out of their garden (like the Raccoon pet)
The Tanuki pet does have the ability to act like a Raccoon, one of the most sought-after pets in Grow a Garden. But it can only do listed actions per cycle, making it a sort of weaker version of the Raccoon.
