As of July 21, 2025, Roblox renamed Friends to Connections. The change comes as part of the ongoing overhaul of how the platform handles communication between users. The popular company is known for hosting hundreds of thousands of games that attract a predominantly minor audience. In a recent press release, Roblox announced the introduction of new social media features:
- Trusted Connections
- Unfiltered Chat
- Age Estimation

Roblox Staffer Explains Why They Renamed Friends to Connections
After the initial press release, Roblox staff member JavaJiving shared a more detailed explanation of the changes on the official Creator Hub. The post gives a brief explanation of why the company decided to rename Friends to Connections. It seems the changes made to the communication features on the platform are why Roblox chose to remove Friends and make it Connections. The relevant portion of the Roblox staffer’s post reads:
“To better reflect the diverse and evolving ways users interact on Roblox, we’re renaming ‘Friends’ to ‘Connections’ across the platform. This new terminology more accurately encompasses the broad spectrum of valuable interactions — from quick team-ups to long-term collaborations or joining large communities — that flourish on Roblox.”
Features in Roblox’s New Connections Update
To understand the renaming better, let us look at some of the new features in the update. The most important addition in the update is perhaps the Trusted Connections feature. This directly redefines how Friends worked in the past. As per the press release, users who are above 13 years old will now be able to have unfiltered chats with those they designate as Trusted Connections.
This is meant to differentiate between the more casual Roblox acquaintances from friends and family. You will still be able to talk to normal ‘Connections,’ but the communication line will be subject to more stringent filters. This feature is only available to Roblox users above 13 years old. The new Age Estimation feature will help you verify your age using Persona and other third-party software. The age check will determine what features you can access:
- 13-17: Can access Trusted Connections from the app and also add them using the Contact Importer on their mobile
- Adults (18+): If only adults are in a 1:1 chat, gain access to more unfiltered features such as expressive chats
- Adults cannot add minors as Trusted Connections without the Contact Importer or real-life QR scanning features.
The update also brings a revamped parental control interface, allowing parents to monitor and safeguard their children while using Roblox.
