Umamusume Pretty Derby integrates gambling-like mechanics through gacha pulls, training risks, events, and legacy sparks, challenging players’ strategy and luck.

As a gacha game, Umamusume Pretty Derby has several gameplay mechanics based on chance, which tempt players to test their luck. However, not all of these gambles are made on the basis of currency or real-world money. Some gambles involve pulling for your favorite characters, while others are made during character training. Let’s take a look at all the gambling mechanics in Umamusume Pretty Derby and explore their functioning.
Umamusume Pretty Derby: All Gambling Types in the Game

Pulling on Support Card and Character Banners
The primary gambling mechanic in Umamusume: Pretty Derby is, of course, its gacha system called Scouting. You can spend Carats on either pulling on the current Support Card or Character banner. The roll rates for the featured card or character are marginally higher than normal (0.75%). However, you need 200 pulls (30,000 Carats) to guarantee the target character/card.
Newer players should pull on Support Card Banners first, as they help get duplicate copies of SR and SSR Support Cards. These duplicates can be used to uncap support cards and raise their max level. Having higher-level support cards in your loadout helps train stronger umas with higher stats after completing their careers.
However, once you have a fair distribution of support cards, pulling on Character banners is more rewarding. This is because you are most likely to pull R support cards or 1-star characters in the banners. R support cards are almost completely useless, but getting duplicate 1-star characters awards you with their Star Pieces, which help raise their star level.
Once upgraded to 3-stars, even originally 1-star characters are significantly stronger, with higher stats, their true unique skill, and the ability to pass the skill down through Legacies. After the beginner phase, it’s ideal to save up Carats to pull on specific banners for characters you like or support cards which are meta. Training

Training in Umamusume Pretty Derby involves gambling on the chance of training failure if the stakes are high enough. Even if your uma has a high chance of training failure, when multiple friendship (rainbow) trainings are active, it can be worth the risk to perform training. Such situations can provide anywhere from a 20 to 100 stat increase in a single training session, depending on the number of support cards stacked. If the training fails, it will lead to reduced mood and stat loss. This ultimately leads to a waste of time, as you may need to restart the career after not attaining the stats you were hoping for.
Events
Certain career events, like the ‘Crane Game’ and ‘Acupuncturist,’ present an opportunity to gamble your career’s progress for higher stat and SP (Skill Point) rewards. Even some trainee event choices offer a larger energy gain if you are ready to risk the small chance of getting a negative status effect.
Legacy Sparks
After the end of each career, your uma will earn largely randomized Sparks. You will want a 3-star Blue Spark, but there is only a 6-11% chance of getting a Blue Spark with high enough stats. This incentivizes players to keep completing careers to get 3-star Sparks for multiple characters. Ultimately, Umamusume Pretty Derby’s gameplay loop is fueled by several gambling mechanics built into it. These elements reward players for risk assessment and consistency in playing the game.
