Hell Is Us is arguably one of the most intriguing releases of 2025, simply due to the game’s approach to its storytelling and combat. On the surface, Hell Is Us looks like any modern narrative-driven action-adventure game with a third-person perspective. In fact, the game bears a striking resemblance to titles like Death Stranding and even Uncharted.

However, when it comes to the combat system, Hell Is Us is quite surprising. Most third-person action games usually tend to feature a “tried and tested” cover-based shooter format. Be it Gears of War or Uncharted. However, in Hell Is Us, combat is entirely melee-focused, complete with a stamina management system.

Given how the combat works in Hell Is Us, some players might assume it to be a souls-like game. However, is Hell Is Us really another take on the souls-like genre, or is it something else entirely? Well, Hell Is Us isn’t technically a souls-like. However, it does have elements within its combat system that mirror the souls-like genre. Here’s everything you need to know about the combat system and progression in Hell Is Us.

Hell Is Us Combat System, Explained

Hell Is Us follows a similar combat system to most hack-and-slash action games. All your actions, dodges, attacks, parries, and blocks are tied to your Stamina Gauge. However, every action has a specific amount of Stamina consumption tied to it. Furthermore, the game also binds your Max HP to your Max Stamina.

This means that if your total HP drops, so does your Stamina. While you do recover lost Stamina over time, HP that’s lost remains so until replenished via Medkits and the Healing Pulse. Speaking of the Healing Pulse, it’s a similar system to the Ki Pulse in Nioh. Essentially, when you attack an enemy, you will see a ring forming across Remi.

If you press the Healing Pulse key (L1 or LB) right when the ring has formed, it will heal a set amount of HP automatically. Using the Healing Pulse, you can easily top off your HP without having to expend Medkits or other resources.

In addition to the stamina-based system, Hell Is Us also features multiple weapon types, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the Dual Axes are small weapons that can land multiple hits quite fast. However, the weapon’s single-hit damage isn’t that impressive.

On the other hand, there’s the Greatsword, which dishes out incredibly high amounts of damage with single hits, but lacks the agility of the Dual Axes.

Is Hell Is Us As Challenging As Souls-Likes?

While Hell Is Us’s combat system is inspired by souls-like games, it doesn’t have a similar level-based progression. As such, it’s not nearly as challenging as FromSoftware’s “Souls” games. However, that’s by design. Hell Is Us, despite its flashy combat system, is focused more on delivering an engaging story.

Furthermore, the game does have multiple difficulty presets, which can be tweaked to make it more (or less) challenging. You can also tweak the amount of damage dealt by the enemies as well as their respawn rate.
