Here’s everything you need to learn about the basics of combat to master playing as Hornet in Hollow Knight Silksong.

Hollow Knight Silksong is out, and you can now jump into combat playing as the lethal assassin Hornet. She is the protagonist of Silksong, and her expertise lies in precision movement and the usage of unique tools.
At the start of the game, Hornet can be seen captured and brought to the kingdom of Pharloom, which is located far away from Hallownest, the setting of the first game. However, she is weak and won’t have access to most of her arsenal right from the beginning.
To help you out, here’s everything you need to know about the combat system of Hollow Knight Silksong.
Basics of Combat in Hollow Knight Silksong

Silk Is the New Soul
In Silksong, Hornet has access to a new type of energy/resource, which she can use to either heal or use other abilities, called Silk. Just like Soul in Hollow Knight, she can obtain Silk by hitting enemies with her nail and damaging them. You can see how much Silk you have by looking at the small spool located underneath the health bar at the top-left corner of the screen.
Nail Attacks in Silksong

Just like Silent Knight, Hornet also uses a nail to attack enemies. The basic attacking in Silksong isn’t that different from the prequel, but there are changes nonetheless. Just like before, you can attack while looking up, down, left, and right. However, looking down now doesn’t attack directly downwards. You have to select a lower diagonal area to choose and attack.
The reason for this change is likely that developers want Hornet to avoid having to pogo around the map. Pogo-ing is a tech that you can use in Hollow Knight to attack hazards underneath to propel yourself upward and stay in the air. In Silksong, Hornet has far higher mobility, as she can push herself toward enemies using her Silk.

New Tools That Hornet Can Use
The Tools are new items that replace the Charms system in Silksong. These are unique and cool items that allow Hornet to get an edge over her enemies in Pharloom. However, you must continue to repair them using a new currency. As you progress through the game, Hornet can get her hands on better Crests, on which you can attach more tools.
In addition to more tool slots, Crests themselves provide unique buffs that can either help Hornet offensively or defensively.
