Moss Mother is the first boss you face in Hollow Knight Silksong. Here’s a guide on how to defeat her, including some tips and tricks.
When you play Hollow Knight Silksong and get halfway through the tutorial zone, Moss Mother is the first boss you encounter in the game. She is similar to Gruz Mother from Hollow Knight, but slightly more challenging. However, she is relatively easy to defeat due to her predictable attack pattern. Even so, if you are having trouble beating her, here’s a guide on how to defeat Moss Mother in Hollow Knight Silksong.
Location of the Moss Mother in Hollow Knight Silksong
The Moss Mother is located in the second-to-last room in the upper section of Moss Grotto. You can fight her after climbing up the Ruined Chapel and going left. Note that there is a bench in the lower section of the Ruined Chapel; sit on it to mark it as a checkpoint in case you die to the boss. If you cannot find the exact location, refer to the image above and head to the area indicated by the crosshair at the bottom left.
Hollow Knight Silksong: Moss Mother Boss Overview
The Moss Mother is a large green bee that stays afloat throughout the entire fight and attacks using her stinger. Her only direct attacking move is a charge attack, where she gets close to the ground and moves to the other side of the arena. If you come into contact with her, Hornet loses one health point. Additionally, she can slam the ceiling to drop rocks on the arena.
Once you deal enough damage to Moss Mother, she gets stunned and enters the second phase after a few seconds. In this phase, she becomes more aggressive with her attacks. Furthermore, the ceiling slam now sometimes drops weak caterpillar enemies that you fight throughout the Moss Grotto.

Moss Mother Tips and Tricks
If you are having trouble defeating this boss, here are some valuable tips and tricks:
- Stay in the middle of the arena to have the best chance to dodge Moss Mother’s stinger attack. You can jump over her entire attack and avoid taking damage.
- The rocks have a dust trail before dropping, so watch for them to avoid getting hit.
- Take out the smaller enemies as soon as she spawns them. Each takes two hits to defeat and can be dealt with fairly quickly.
- While the boss is stunned, go near her and attack while looking up to dish out significant amounts of damage. The boss deals one damage and has very low health. Therefore, you can afford to take a few hits if it results in dealing a lot of damage to her.
Defeating the Moss Mother unlocks the next room, which marks the end of the tutorial zone of Hollow Knight Silksong.
