Regulation J of the Pokemon VGC format is allowing Mythical Pokemon to be used. While some of them are really good and are probably going to see play at the highest level, there are several of them that are not as valuable. As Mythical Pokemon can only be used in the two Restricted slots out of six, players will need to be careful with the Mythicals that they pick. In this guide, we will look at the Mythical Pokemon that are best avoided.

Worst Mythical Pokemon To Use in VGC Regulation J

These Mythical Pokemon are among the least likely to see success in Regulation J in Pokemon VGC:

  • Zarude
  • Manaphy
  • Deoxys (Defense Forme)
  • Shaymin
  • Phione

5) Zarude

Zarude has some potential owing to its decent stat spread as well as access to the move Jungle Healing, which can heal it and its ally. However, its typing is vulnerable to multiple common types in the meta like Fire- and Fighting-, which include Pokemon like Incineroar, Koraidon, and Sneasler. But its main issue is its weakness to the common pivot move, U-Turn, which is a Bug-type. As Zarude is a Grass/Dark dual type it takes double damage when a Pokemon switches out while targeting it with U-Turn.

4) Manaphy

Manaphy is a decent Mythical Pokemon. It has base 100 stats across the board, a pure Water-typing, and access to the boosting move Tail Glow. While it can use Heart Swap or Baton Pass to pass on a Tail Glow boost to an ally, base 100 Speed is just not enough to outspeed a lot of Pokemon these days. As a result, dedicating a Restricted Pokemon slot to Manaphy may not be worth the investment.

3) Deoxys (Defense Forme)

While Deoxys Attack is more offensively inclined, Deoxys Defense has high defensive stats. Admittedly, 160 in both Defense and Special Defense is really good. But this is undercut not only by a 50 HP stat, but a Psychic typing which leaves it vulnerable to Ghost- and Dark-types like Calyrex Shadow Rider, Flutter Mane, and Chien-Pao. Even its vast support movepool, consisting of moves like Recover, Knock Off, Teleport, or Taunt, does not make dedicating a Restricted Pokemon slot to Deoxys Defense worth it.

2) Shaymin

Shaymin is in a similar boat as Manaphy, having base 100 stats across the board. Except it has the much less useful typing in Grass and a situational ability in Natural Cure. Even its signature move Seed Flare, which has a high chance of dropping its target’s Special Defense by two stages, is risky to use owing to its low accuracy.

1) Phione

Phione is a worse Manaphy. While it is possible to leave it there, its also worth noting that Phione has worse stats with base 80s across the board. It also lacks Tail Glow which was one of the few things that made Manaphy worth considering. So, this leaves Phione as the worst Mythical Pokemon in VGC Regulation J.
