After years of anticipation, Hollow Knight Silksong is finally out, and the game is just as hard as we wanted it to be. But it can be overwhelmingly hard, especially if you’re just starting out, for which we have now made this Ultimate Starter Guide.

The goal of this Hollow Knight Silksong Ultimate Starter Guide is to help you find your footing in the early hours of the game and prepare you for the challenges ahead. We’ll go over some of the basics of movements, exploration, combat, and more. In essence, this article will cover everything you need to know when starting out with Hollow Knight Silksong.

Everything You Need To Know When Starting Hollow Knight Silksong

Move and Heal

Hornet is far more agile than the Knight in Hollow Knight, and you’re expected to make use of this agility to survive. The first way to make the most of this agility is to incorporate it into your healing. You can move while healing, allowing you to heal midair. This means that you can jump in the middle of a boss battle and use Bind to heal in the safety of the air. This is useful against bosses that are aggressive on the ground.

Get Used to Diagonal Pogo

Sticking to the point we were making about Hornet’s expanded agility, you’ll need to master her Pogo if you wish to progress deeper into the game. The Pogo ability is a downward attack that you can use to bounce off of enemies and platforms. The issue, however, is that the attack comes at a 45-degree angle. This means you have to predict and master Hornet’s diagonal path in order to pass some of the tougher platforming challenges.

Acquire a Map and a Compass Early

Hollow Knight Silksong is a metroidvania, and getting lost while exploring is something you should be comfortable with. While it’s not so difficult to deal with in the Mosslands, you’ll immediately find yourself pulling your hair due to the complexities of the levels past the starting area.

To combat this, you need to acquire a Map and a Compass early by talking to Shakra. The map shows you the general layout of the level, while the compass will show you your location on the map. Combined, you can use these two tools to navigate any level.

Farm Rosaries

Just like Hollow Knight had its Geo, Hollow Knight Silksong has Rosaries as its main currency. You’ll need this currency for a lot of important items in the game, most notably the Map and the Compass. All vendors deal in Rosary, and if you’re looking to get anywhere, you’ll need to farm the currency. There are quite a few farming spots, but we recommend farming the spot right at the start of Mosshome.

Hit Every Wall

Hollow Knight Silksong is a metroidvania and sticks true to the genre with its abundance of secrets. There are a ton of secrets for you to find, some of which you may not even uncover in your first few playthroughs. In order to see all that there is to see in the game, make it a habit to hit everything. Sometimes, hitting a wall reveals a new passage that leads to secret areas. You may also find hidden items inside barrels. Hit everything, even if it seems insignificant.

Unlock the Benches

Silksong is a difficult game, but a lot of this difficulty comes from its runbacks and scarcity of checkpoints. Benches are the game’s version of bonfires, and you can use these points to save your game and heal up. The problem is that a lot of them require you to pay a certain number of Rosaries to unlock.

We recommend farming and keeping 100 Rosaries in your pocket at all times for the benches you may find. Unlocking these benches will make boss runbacks easier and the game a whole lot less frustrating.

Equip Tools

Silksong offers you a ton of tools to navigate your way across the fallen kingdom, and using these tools is necessary, especially in the mid-to-late game. To equip your tools, head over to any bench and press the corresponding Tools button. You can then equip or remove any of the tools as you see fit. Each level presents a different challenge, so keep that in mind when picking one for the task.

Manage Your Silk Efficiently

Resource management is key in the game, and Silk is by far the most important resource in Silksong. Silk is the resource you use to heal and to use some of your special abilities. You can see your Silk by looking at the battery-like icon in the top left corner of your screen. Managing this resource requires you to pick and choose between healing and dealing damage. We recommend prioritizing healing above all else since enemies in this game deal 2 mask damage.
