Everything you need to know about the weapon upgrades system in Hell Is Us and how to easily increase weapon Grades and attack power.
Combat in Hell Is Us is easily the weakest aspect of the game, with the environmental storytelling and puzzles taking center stage. Despite that, it’s still an integral part of the Hell Is Us experience. As such, the game will constantly put you in scenarios where you will have to face hordes of Hollow Walkers. Thankfully, to help with the game’s increasingly challenging Hollow Walker types, there’s a robust weapons upgrade system in Hell Is Us.
However, like any other gameplay mechanic in Rogue Factor’s action-adventure game, the weapon upgrade system isn’t explained all that well. And for players new to action games, it can be a tad overwhelming. To help with that, here’s a comprehensive guide on Hell Is Us’ weapon upgrade system. Furthermore, in this guide, we will also explain a few easy ways to farm weapon Grades early.

How To Upgrade Weapons In Hell Is Us
Before you can upgrade the weapons you’ve collected, you first need to find a Blacksmith. To do so, you need to progress through Act 1 until you reach Acasa Marshes. After reaching Acasa Marshes, make your way towards Panthem Abbey, this is where you will find Blacksmith Vitalis’s apprentice. After that, you need to unlock the basement in Vitalis’s house.
Furthermore, you also need to collect elemental (Rage, Ecstasy, Terror, and Grief) Shards for weapon upgrades. You can do so by killing enemies across Acasa Marshes and Senedra Forest. After unlocking Vitalis’s basement, you can go back out to find the apprentice as your Blacksmith.
Every weapon can be upgraded to Grade 5. However, you won’t be able to do so until Act 2. In Act 1, however, you can upgrade your weapons to Grade 3 quite easily. Grades are essentially upgrade tiers for any weapon type in Hell Is Us. Upgrading a Grade lets you increase a weapon’s proficiency levels by using it in combat (somewhat akin to Elder Scrolls games).
With every proficiency level gained, the weapons get a combo damage increase. As such, you will be able to deal more damage, based on the number of hits landed on the enemies. Furthermore, increased damage also translates to a higher Healing Pulse multiplier. This means that you will be able to siphon more health out of enemies for every hit that you land.
How To Get Upgrade Resources for Weapons
To get the upgrade resources, you simply need to kill enemies. In Hell Is Us, enemies can go up to Grade 3. Higher Grade enemies are tankier and have more sophisticated Hazes. However, defeating them yields better resources and higher weapon experience. If you want to farm weapon experience (and upgrade shards), there’s no better place than Panthem Abbey (Acasa Marshes), as it houses plenty of Grade 2 enemies. Furthermore, if you want to farm Grade 3 enemies, you can try Jeljin or Mists of Plains.
