Fans have noticed a lack of Hyperion Weapons in Borderlands 4. Here are the gameplay and lore-related reasons for it.

Hyperion Weapons have been some of the strongest guns in the Borderlands franchise over the past installments. However, it seems like the developers have completely excluded all arms from this well-known manufacturer in the latest Borderlands 4. Furthermore, creative associate director Grant Kao has revealed that the reason for such a decision is both gameplay and Lore related in an interview with Restart. In this guide, we will discuss it in detail.
Borderlands 4 is set to officially release on September 12, 2025. But PC players and console players in some specific regions will get to play it from September 11 instead. Furthermore, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has an October 3, 2025, release date.
Why Borderlands 4 Does Not Have Hyperion Weapons
Handsome Jack and his arms manufacturing company, Hyperion, have been major antagonists for the entire Borderlands timeline. Both the CEO and the brand have also been featured in Gearbox Software’s looter shooter franchise. So naturally, fans were quite surprised when they realized that Hyperion Weapons are not included in Borderlands 4, despite the brand making a few appearances in the latest entry.
Gameplay Reasons
So, to shed some light on the issue, Gearbox’s creative associate director, Grant Kao, has stated that
Part of the reason why the Hyperion manufacturer does not fully return (it returns as a licensed part but doesn’t fully return in Borderlands 4) is because the behavior that was connected with the Hyperion manufacturer was that you would start very inaccurate.”
He further added, “But as you held down the fire button for, like, an assault rifle or SMG or whatnot,” Kao goes on, “it would become extremely accurate, the most accurate gun, but it would have to require you to unload at least the beginning or half of the mag to get there.” In addition to that, Kao also explained that while Hyperion weapons showed off high accuracy in the end, it just did not feel right to the studio in the context of Borderlands 4’s gameplay.

Lore Reasons
Other than not sitting right with the gameplay, there are also lore reasons behind the lack of Hyperion weapons in the latest entry. As we briefly mentioned earlier, since Borderlands 2, both the brand and its CEO, Handsome Jack, have been an integral part of the franchise’s story, with numerous appearances in many different titles, including Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands.
However, since his multiple falls from power and grace, the once great gunmakers have lost their hold on the world of Borderlands and have also become quite insignificant to the IP’s storyline, according to Grant Kao. Because of these reasons, Gearbox Software has largely excluded Hyperion and their weapons from Borderlands 4 and given the spotlight to other manufacturers such as the Order and Mailwan.
