Following the introductory cutscene after choosing a Vault Hunter, Borderlands 4 thrusts you into its first main mission, ‘Guns Blazing.’ The debut quest serves as a tutorial, allowing players to become familiar with the game’s basic mechanics. After character selection, you find yourself in the Timekeeper’s oppressive clutches, and you are rescued by Arjay, a Vault Hunter who is part of the Crimson Resistance. As you follow Arjay to break out of the Timekeeper’s facility, ‘Guns Blazing’ begins.

After dropping down the hole in the floor, you’ll notice a Do-Over Station on the left. Do-Over Stations serve as checkpoints throughout the game, allowing you to respawn if you die.

Part 1: Escape the Prison

Follow Arjay as you battle your way through the prison. Shoot at the robot guards barring your way using the simple firearm Arjay hands you. Aim for headshots as they deal extra damage, quickly bringing down enemies before they can make a move.

Collect ammo dropped by enemies and loot any containers you come across along the way. Lootable containers are highlighted by a strip of green light on their latches. Holding “E” on the keyboard or “X” on a controller loots all nearby items at once. Holding “Q” or the Right D-pad will mark the looted items as trash, allowing you to sell them all at once later.

Arjay will soon furnish you with a repkit, a new healing item introduced with Borderlands 4. Use the repkit by pressing “T” or the Left D-pad. Repkits have a cooldown and should therefore be used at every opportunity.

Find the Security Room

The Security Room lies beyond the large number of Synth Armatures (robots) you will encounter on top of a staircase. If your health reaches zero, you’ll be downed and enter a Second Wind phase rather than dying immediately. During Second Wind, you can crawl around and kill an enemy to get back up, or be revived by a teammate.

After disposing of all the Synth Armatures, follow Arjay into the Security Room behind them. Inside, open the green chest to find weapons. Weapon drops in Borderlands 4 are random, but you should get green rarity weapons from the chest to replace your starter pistol. Interact with the red button on the far end of the room to lift the lockdown and proceed further.

Part 2: Reach the Getaway Ship

Exiting the Security Room, you’ll reach the outer facility. Follow the Vault icon quest marker and prepare to engage Armatures over longer ranges. Stick to cover behind crates and pillars when large groups show up, and forage for ammo up the stairs on the right side if needed.

Upon reaching the end of the shooting gallery, Arjay will give you the Grapple Grabber, a grappling hook you can use on grapple points using “V” or the Right Stick. Use the Grapple Grabber on the grapple point marked by the Vault icon to climb past the barricade. Slide down the outside wall with Arjay and swim across the water to reach the other side.

Defeat Manglers in the Forest

After escaping the facility and entering the forested area, take the path to the right and defeat the Manglers. Like Skags from previous games, Manglers are four-legged beasts that attack in melee. You can use “V” or the Right Stick to melee attack if they get close, or kite them to maintain a safe distance. Loot the green growths on the ground for ammo or cash.

In the next area, climb the ledges and cross the fallen tree above. After coming across a Do-Over Station, you will have to fight another group of Manglers. Continue following Arjay, and you will enter a ravine. Use the Grapple Grabber on the grapple point on the right side of the waterfall and cross the ledge.

Loot the Crimson Resistance Stash

In the next area, Arjay will busy himself unlocking a door while you have to loot a Crimson Resistance stash nearby. Grapple onto the walkway by using the point to the east. Then, climb higher and look to the ledge on the west to find another grapple point. After grappling past a wooden post, you will find the Crimson Resistance stash. Loot it to gain an assortment of items that will likely provide you with better gear.

Head back to Arjay and walk through the unlocked door. You’ll find a chest on a platform to the right side of the main path. After seeing the Timekeeper’s power, you will come across a Vending Machine to sell junk and purchase weapons and consumables. When you are ready, approach Arjay to start the game’s first boss fight.

Part 3: Warden Scathe Boss Fight

Right as you and Arjay are about to reach the escape vehicle, Warden Scathe himself swoops in to stop you. The boss is typically one level higher than you, and the fight shouldn’t be difficult if you take a few precautions.

  • Warden Scathe shoots a stream of yellow projectiles out of his staff as a standard attack. Use the nearby boxy columns for cover against the attack.
  • You will have to first chew through Warden Scathe’s yellow armor health bar before you can damage his actual health bar.
  • Quickly shoot down any robots as they spawn to reduce sources of damage and to avoid being surrounded. Pick up the red healing kits dropped by them to replenish your health during the fight.
  • Aim at Warden Scathe’s head to easily score critical hits and deal extra damage.

You will likely level up after defeating Warden Scathe, unlocking your Action Skills.
