With the end of the 2025 Pokemon World Championships, players have now started focusing on the 2026 season. While the Frankfurt Regional saw several innovative strategies and teams in play, the Monterray Regional, being held at the same time, saw an even more unexpected team as the victor. Stefan Mott would win his second VGC Regional using a Scyther of all Pokemon. In this article, we will discuss how he used it and the rest of his team in battle to win the tournament.

Stefan Mott’s Scyther Build for Pokemon VGC

Stefan’s team has multiple unique Pokemon on his team, with his Scyther standing out the most. Despite not being a fully evolved Pokemon and a Bug/Flying type, Scyther has many good traits that Stefan uses to his advantage. Scyther was once a fully evolved Pokemon and has the stats of one, with an Attack stat of 110 and a Speed stat of 105. And as Scyther can evolve, holding the item Eviolite gives it a substantial boost to its defenses as well. This makes Scyther a well-rounded threat in the Regulation H meta, where Legendary and Paradon Pokemon are banned.

Scyther makes good use of its Attack stat thanks to its ability Technician and the Flying-type move Dual Wingbeat. Technician boosts attacks with base power of 60 or lower by 30, which boosts a single hit of Dual Wingbeat. Scyther also gets STAB on the pivot move U-Turn, dealing slightly more damage to Dark-types. Finally, against any potential Rock-type, Stefan’s Scyther could Terastallize into a Steel-type for defensive purposes and hit back with Close Combat for offense.

Other Notable Members of Stefan Mott’s Pokemon VGC Team

Some of Stefan’s team are fairly standard for the Regulation H meta, such as Incineroar, Gholdengo, and Alolan Ninetales. However, another unique member of Stefan’s team is his Sylveon, though this Eeveelution has seen some use in VGC in the past. Sylveon spams Pixilate boosted Hyper Voice, which gets further powered up by the item Throat Spray.

However, besides his Scyther, Stefan’s Garganacl stands out. Garganacl is a Rock-type with a useful ability in Purifying Salt and a powerful signature move in Salt Cure, which deals additional damage over time. These traits are useful for Singles play but often leave Garganacl at risk of being double-targeted in VGC. Stefan gets around this by giving it a pinch Berry, which usually activates when its holder is at 25% HP. He specifically gives it a Maranga Berry to boost its Special Defense by one stage. Hence, it survives the second hit if targeted by a second Special Attack.
