Borderlands 4 had a bit of a rocky launch. In fact, there are thousands of reviews on Steam that mention numerous performance issues. However, Gearbox Software is working on it and will push more patches to provide an even better performance. However, what do you do in the meantime? How can you get more FPS? Well, the most common answer we see on the internet is frame generation (FG), which doubles the FPS, albeit with some flaws of its own.

The question is, should you use frame gen to improve performance in Borderlands 4? The short answer is yes, but there are some things you must do before you enable it. Let us explain in this detailed article where we explain how well FG has been implemented in this game. Read on to learn more.

Which Frame Gen Technologies Are Available in Borderlands 4?

Borderlands 4 is equipped with the frame gen technologies from all three hardware vendors: Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. Therefore, you will find DLSS FG, DLSS MFG, FSR DG, and XeSS FG. As long as you bought a GPU in the last 5-7 years, you will be able to use FG to increase FPS in the game.

The only exception here is DLSS MFG, which is only compatible with the latest RTX 50 series cards. However, the RTX 40 series GPU can use the regular DLSS FG.

Should You Enable Frame Gen in Borderlands 4?

Frame generation technology has both pros and cons. The best thing about FG is that it doubles the FPS, making motion in the game smoother. The characters, environments, and everything appear smoother. However, the latency increases ever so slightly. Therefore, even though a game may appear smoother, it doesn’t feel as responsive as it does when actual FPS increases. That’s the downside of FG.

Games look smoother, but it doesn’t feel the same. This is one of the reasons why we don’t recommend using frame generation in competitive and esports titles, where latency and responsiveness are the key to winning. However, Borderlands 4 is not a competitive title. It is a multiplayer co-op game with a lot of action and mayhem, but it’s not a PvP title. You won’t compete against other players. Therefore, a few milliseconds of latency difference won’t matter here much, but the perceived smoothness from FG surely will.

That is why we recommend users enable frame gen in Borderlands 4. However, please make sure the game achieves at least 45 FPS and above before turning on FG. You can use upscalers and other graphics optimizations to reach the 45+ FPS target. Once you achieve that target, you should enable FG and have a better experience in Borderlands 4.
