Follow our detailed guide to complete the ‘His Vile Sanctum’ mission in Borderlands 4 and beat the Vile Lictor boss.
‘His Vile Sanctum’ is the fourteenth main story mission in Borderlands 4 and begins right after ‘Dark Subject.’ Amara and the Vault Hunters delve into Vile Lictor’s Blacksite in search of Lilith and uncover a sinister plan to access the Phase dimension. Breach Vile Lictor’s fortress and tear through his defenses to face the Order lieutenant head-on.

Part 1: Breach Vile Lictor’s Fortress
Follow Amara and fight your way across the bridge and through Order forces and creeps to reach Lictor’s fortress. The entrance to the fortress is guarded by Orbulus the Orbulescent, a miniboss with a purple health bar. Shoot at the crystal growing out of Orbulus’s head to deplete his purple health bar and quickly bring him down. With the fortress gate sealed shut, fast travel to Belton’s Bore to meet the council.
After the council meeting, head north to the power substation to access the Phase portals being used by Lictor’s forces. Kill the Order forces at the substation and rendezvous with Calder at the coordinate he provides to receive assistance from him and Bruce. After eliminating all the Order troops in the area, follow Bruce as he bursts through a wall and keep any enemies off his back to keep moving forward.

Destabilize the Phase Device
Bruce will shatter the shield surrounding Limiter A, which you can then shoot to destroy. Repeat the process with Limiter B and Limiter C to destabilize the Phase device and stand near Bruce. In the next section, run and grapple straight to the Phase rifts, and feel free to ignore any enemies around as you do so.
Enter Vile Lictor’s Fortress
Once you arrive at the fortress, find Bruce in the northeast section of the map and pick up his control core. Head into the adjacent building and climb the stairs to reach the engineering bay. Insert the core into the console to gain access to Bruce Bombs. Additionally, collect the Bruce Bomb on the console and toss it at the purple Phase barrier to open the path ahead.
Head into the courtyard and pick up the Bruce Bomb spawning at the Matter Relocator by the Sanctum door. Throw it at the Phase shields on either side of the gate and shoot the locks when they pop up. Head through the unlocked gate to breach Vile Lictor’s fortress.

Part 2: Destroy Phase Barriers and Eridian Relics
Inside the Umbral Foundry, pick up the Bruce Bomb on the right and throw it at the Phase barrier ahead. In the room ahead, grapple the marked vent to access a Bruce Bomb to throw at the Phase barrier and enter the elevator.
In the next room, you’ll have to destroy three Eridian Relics to continue. Deplete a relic’s Phase barrier with a Bruce Bomb before shooting to destroy it. You’ll find a Bruce Bomb at the northern end of the area. Lob the bomb at two of the visible relics. There is a Bruce Bomb located to the west of the final relic, which you can reach by jumping across a partially destroyed bridge.
After the relics are destroyed, the Vile twins appear. Shoot at their crystals to deplete their purple health bars and then use Corrosive Damage to melt through the armored health bar underneath. Afterwards, fight through the enemies ahead and board the elevator. Talk to Amara after the elevator ride to complete an optional objective.
Borderlands 4: Vile Lictor Boss Fight Guide
Vile Lictor is an Order lieutenant who has drained power from the Phase dimension to power his ascension to godhood. Here are some tips to make the boss fight easier.
- Vile Lictor is immune to all damage at the start until you destroy one of his limbs, hovering to either side.
- Lictor’s open mouth and the purple Phase core at his center are both weak points you should target whenever they are exposed to land critical hits.
- Don’t stand near the edge of the platform, as his attacks can knock you into the abyss.
- Use Corrosive Damage for his armored health bar and Shock Damage for the shield health bar underneath.
The following are Vile Lictor’s attack moves. Here are some methods you can use to counter them.

| Phase Hands | Energy builds within Lictor’s many hands floating above him, and they launch phase versions of themselves at you. | Strafe to either side to avoid the projectiles. |

| Phase Nova | Lictor creates a Nova at the center of the arena that gathers energy and explodes. | Grapple to the floating platforms surrounding the arena. |
| Skeletal Arm Slam | Giant skeletal arms spawn out of the ground and slam toward you. | Dash to either side to avoid the head-on attack. |
Take Vile Lictor’s Bolt after defeating him and speak with Calder at Belton’s Bore to complete ‘His Vile Sanctum.’ The next main mission awaiting you is ‘Rising Action.’
