As you explore the vast map of Castor Woods, you’re bound to come across a Dark Zone in Dying Light The Beast. The game offers multiple Dark Zones for you to find and explore. Each location promises valuable loot and schematics, but getting those rewards is always going to be tricky.

Dark Zones are also home to a variety of infected simply lurking around their hallways. They’ll pounce on you and take you down if you aren’t careful. So, it’s crucial to understand what you can expect from a Dark Zone before diving inside one. This guide should help familiarize you with these special map locations.

While exploring the huge expanses of Castor Woods, you’ll run into special locations that appear on your map. These could be an abandoned school building, a pharmacy, or any such structure. When you open the map, you’ll notice these buildings are marked by icons of their own. Each of these icons represents Dark Zones. When you enter and complete them the first time around, you’ll be able to claim a blueprint, cosmetic item, or weapon, alongside a variety of other loot.

Once you complete a Dark Zone, it’ll be marked as complete on your map. You can choose to complete each Dark Zone as many times as you want. The enemies inside will respawn, and so will the generic loot. However, you’ll get the unique loot (weapon, schematic, or cosmetic item) only during your first run of a specific Dark Zone location. You can hover over any of the Dark Zone icons on the game’s map to get an idea of the kind of loot or resources you’ll get from it.

The building type also determines the kind of loot you get. For instance, you’ll get more fuel from the Gas Station Dark Zone than, say, from the Pharmacy. However, each of these locations tends to have a good mix of various resource types for you to claim. One final tip to follow here is to always craft several lockpicks before entering Dark Zones, since you’re bound to run into several locked doors in these locations.

Types of Dark Zones

The game has two kinds of Dark Zones. The first one is the smaller locations, where you go in, kill a few low-level infected, and grab whatever loot you can. Some examples of these are:

  • Gas Station
  • Megastore
  • Supermarket

The second type are the Dark Zones that are larger, have multiple levels, and have a mix of high- and low-level infected. So, you’ll have to enter these after proper preparation. While exploring the bigger Dark Zones, you might also trigger side quests in some. Here are some of the larger Dark Zones in the game:

  • Apartments
  • Factory Offices
  • School
