Everything you need to know about the Shrine Vault puzzle in Silent Hill F, including its location and how to unlock it.
The opening few chapters of Silent Hill F are filled with numerous puzzles and brainteasers. While some of these puzzles are quite easy, requiring an easily obtainable key item, others can be a tad tricky to solve. One such puzzle that you will face during your visit to the otherworld is the Shrine Vault. After following the Fox Mask, you will eventually reach a secluded area with a huge vault blocking your path. To unlock the vault, you need two things: the right combination and a piece of the lock itself.
While the game does provide hints to solve this puzzle, in typical Silent Hill fashion, the hints are incredibly vague. That said, solving this puzzle is quite easy if you know where to look for the key item(s). Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to solve the Shrine Vault puzzle in Silent Hill F.

How To Reach the Shrine Vault in Silent Hill F?
The Shrine Vault is a story-related puzzle that you will come across organically upon your very first visit to the otherworld. It’s essentially the final puzzle of this sequence, and one that requires thorough exploration of the location. The vault is situated in a small area, with a number of temples surrounding it. Furthermore, the alleys that lead to the temples are decorated with ema. You can interact with the ema to reveal the symbol associated with the image painted on it. These symbols are the key to unlocking the vault.
You need three of these symbols to unlock the Shrine Vault. However, before you can use the symbols, you need to find a missing piece of the lock. Thankfully, the missing piece can be found quite near the vault itself. You will find the solution to the Shrine Vault’s lock as well as the missing key item within the same area. However, as you explore the location, you will be pursued by a new enemy type.
Furthermore, while the enemy in this location goes down quite easily (with counterattacks), it doesn’t stay dead for long. As such, you’re incentivized to explore the area as quickly as possible.
How To Solve the Shrine Vault Puzzle in Silent Hill F?
The missing key item for the Shrine Vault’s lock can be found in the southeast location. You can access this area by backtracking to the Fox Gate and taking the path to the right. The key item can be found near a rock sculpture, right alongside the ema needed for the final piece of the puzzle. Additionally, the rest of the ema symbols can be found in the alleys close to the Fox Shrine. Here are the symbols you need to use for the Shrine Vault’s puzzle:
- Circle with two vertical lines.
- Circle with a plus symbol.
- Square kite-like symbol.
Refer to the picture above for the correct symbols that you need to use to unlock the Shrine Vault. After unlocking the vault, you will obtain another key item. However, once you pick the key from the altar, the area will be shrouded by red mist. Furthermore, we highly recommend saving at least one Divine Water for this sequence. Using the Divine Water, you will be able to replenish your Sanity, which will help you survive long enough to exit the otherworld.
