Silent Hill F is easily one of, if not the most intriguing, games in the series, simply due to its setting and time period. Unlike past games in the Silent Hill series, Silent Hill F is set in 1960s Japan. And with the shift in the setting, location, and time period comes a few subtle new gameplay innovations. For instance, most of the puzzles in the game are themed around Japanese customs and rituals. For instance, the very first puzzle you come across in the game’s version of the otherworld, i.e., the altar puzzle.

The puzzle is fairly simple; you need to place 5 key items in their correct places (scales). However, the game only gives you very vague hints at the correct positions for said items. Thankfully, solving this puzzle is quite easy, once you look closely enough.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to solve the altar puzzle in Silent Hill F.

In front of the altar, you will find a note stating:

  • Thy restless heart betrays thee as unfit for this auspicious day.
  • Thou must first pay respect to the gods and the spirits of thine ancestors.
  • A restless heart leads to a corrupt soul.
  • Only through sufficient offerings laid upon many stands may thy soul be cleansed.

Essentially, you need to place the offerings in front of the altar, upon the stands (scales), albeit in the right order. As for the right order, you simply need to match the symbol on the scales with the ribbon pattern on the offerings. If you’re using HDR, we recommend tweaking the brightness a bit to make it easier to spot the symbols on the altar.

The altar puzzle is part of the main story in Silent Hill F. As such, you cannot miss it. You will come across this puzzle on your very first visit to the Dark Shrine, the game’s version of Silent Hill’s otherworld. However, instead of a rusted and decayed alternate world, the Dark Shrine is based around ancient Japanese temples, albeit with a darker side. Hinako travels to the Dark Shrine often at the climax of a chapter.

While the game doesn’t explicitly mention the significance of the Dark Shrine, it seems to symbolize Hinako’s crumbling mental state. Furthermore, in the Dark Shrine, Hinako’s weapons don’t have degrading durability. You essentially get enchanted weapons in the Dark Shrine, which can be used indefinitely. Similar to the Dark Shrine, the puzzles in this place also have narrative significance.

The altar, for instance, is meant to symbolize Hinako’s fear of rituals related to weddings.
