Discover how to unlock Below the Surface in Borderlands 4, defeat its bosses, and claim Legendary rewards.
‘Below the Surface’ is a side mission in Borderlands 4 that you can take on once you reach Dominion City. To unlock ‘Below the Surface,’ you must complete ‘The Falling Wall,’ the 17th main mission. The mission follows the Vault Hunter’s foray into an underground research facility where the Order is conducting twisted experiments.
Borderlands 4: Below the Surface Walkthrough
To begin ‘Below the Surface,’ travel to the Terminus District in Dominion City and speak with Ted, found north of the Frantic Scrawl fast travel location. Ted tells you about an inhumane underground facility and hands over a keycard to its entrance. Head east to the facility’s entrance and use the keycard to venture into it.
Reach Labs
When you step into the elevator in the first room, it doesn’t work, and you’ll have to use the grappling hook on the vent grate near the room’s entrance. Head into the air duct, follow the path, and drop down at its end.
Continue forward until you climb out of the water. Here, you have an optional objective to find the five ECHO logs scattered within the facility. The first ECHO log is on the table in the room you enter after climbing out of the water.
When you crouch through the small vent and a creature runs ahead of you, the second ECHO log is in the room straight ahead, behind a vent grate on its left wall. When you go through the marked door in the first room, check the left corner for a broken window containing the third ECHO log. Continue ahead and use the grapple point above to enter the main lab.

Kill Vile Ted and the Experiments
Defeat all the failed experiments to clear the infestation in the main lab. Reactivate the elevator using the console up the stairs in the western corner of the room. Kill the Vile Experiments and Vile Ted once he arrives and transforms.
- Shoot the purple crystals sticking out of Vile enemies to destroy their Vile (purple) health bar. Shooting them anywhere else before destroying the crystals inflicts no damage. Using AoE attacks is an easy way to take out the crystals.
- When the crystals are destroyed, they will float around the Vile enemy as a purple light, eventually reattaching themselves and replenishing the Vile health bar. Shoot the purple light to destroy it before the crystals can regenerate.
Vile Ted drops the fourth ECHO log, and you can find the fifth ECHO log on the right side of the lab’s entrance, next to a corpse.

You have a chance to receive the following Legendary drops by killing Vile Ted and The Experiments:
- Seventh Sense
- Pistol with damage burst on reload
- Goalkeeper
- Assault Rifle with damage boost when the gun shield is depleted
