The Silent Hill games have always been about confronting your fears, but Silent Hill F takes it to another level by forcing you up close in constant combat. Yes, Silent Hill F is the most combat-heavy game of the series, and it is quite challenging, too, with many players comparing it to a souls-like.

While we won’t dive into the debate of whether or not Silent Hill F is a souls-like, we will say that approaching the game as one will be to your detriment. The combat in Silent Hill F forces you to play more on the defensive, and demands being clever with the fights you pick. If the combat in this game is giving you trouble, this guide is for you.

Combat Tips and Tricks in Silent Hill F

1) Run Whenever Possible

Starting off this list is – uh – run? Yes, while it may seem counterintuitive at a glance, running is often the best strategy you have in most combat scenarios in Silent Hill F. The game even teaches you this during the first hour, throwing you into situations you can easily run away from. This is made even more important when you consider your limited weapon durability. You can’t run away from bosses, so you need your weapons in top shape for those unskippable encounters.

2) Play Defensive

Should you fail to bail on time, playing defensively is the best way to approach combat in Silent Hill F. Enemies have erratic attack patterns in the game, but you can almost always tell an attack is coming when the enemy starts pointing a weapon or body part in your direction.

As soon as you see a cue for an attack, prepare yourself to dodge. As soon as you do, rush to the enemy and dish out a heavy attack to stun them. This will then give you the chance to dish out further damage till they recover.

3) Use Counterattacks

If the enemy’s attack cue involves a certain purple-ish glow, it means the attack that comes next is something you can counter. Whenever you see the glow appear, press the heavy attack button to counterattack. If you do, Hinako will then interrupt the enemy attack, seemingly teleporting up close and smashing a steel pipe into the enemy liver like prime Ippo.

If you feel you’re struggling with the narrow counterattack window, you can elongate it by using Focus mode. This mode increases the duration of the counter window, making the enemies easier to deal with. Of course, a mode this powerful comes at a cost – Sanity in this case. Keep tabs on your Sanity during combat and make sure to restore it before difficult encounters.

4) Heal Strategically

Healing is an essential part of the Silent Hill F combat loop. The enemies in this game hit like a truck, and your HP will be flashing red more often than you’d like. The game gives you several items to remedy this, but picking the right item is paramount in combat.

Each healing item you use in this has a different healing time. You have to keep this in mind when healing, because you’ll be locked into a brief healing animation for however long that item dictates. If you use a Red Capsule, you get a small chunk of health, but it’s instantaneous. If you use a bandage, you get a larger chunk, but it takes longer. Keep this in mind when healing, and position yourself in the arena accordingly.

If you find your HP insufficient for most encounters, we also recommend increasing your total HP. You can do so by visiting any of the in-game shrines and interacting with them to open a menu. In this menu, you’ll then find the Pray button. Click on this, and you’ll then be able to level up stats. Here, you can upgrade tons of stuff, but keep health and stamina a priority.
