In this guide, we shall go over the Closest Target and Smart Targeting aiming modes of Megabonk and pick the best one for you.

Megabonk offers you a variety of ways to approach its addictive combat, but if you’re one to dish out damage from a distance, you need to master its aiming system. At a glance, it seems all perfectly simple. The aiming system is split into a Closest Target mode and Smart Targeting mode. Reading the titles of these two modes, you’ll then see that the former would aim for enemies closest to you, while the latter would assess your situation and adapt accordingly.
Unfortunately, both these weapons have their downfalls, and as it stands, you have no choice but to adapt to them and pick the right mode. If you’re wondering which of these two modes you should adapt to your combat strategies, then this guide is for you.

We recommend using the Closest Target mode for aiming in Megabonk because it is the superior and more precise mode available at the moment. What the target does is it targets enemies closest to you.
Where it falls short, however, is in persistent targeting. You may be able to use the mode to hit an enemy once, but there’s no guarantee your next shot will do the same. It’s a possibility that it may instead hit another that walked up close to you. This leads to situations where you’re being bullied by a single low-HP enemy, and your targeting just refuses to finish him off. This may be frustrating, but you have to adapt by positioning yourself accordingly, closest to the enemy you wish to finish off.
If you’re still not sold on why Closest Target is good for you, we can perhaps sell you on why Smart Target is bad for you. Despite what its name may suggest, Smart Target is anything but. This aiming mode is hilariously bad at enemy prioritization, putting you at the mercy of RNG to land hits.
At the very least, Closest Target allows you to compensate for poor prioritization by positioning yourself closest to the enemy you wish to kill. This makes Closest Target the option you should pick.
