Learn how to unlock and defeat Leader Willem in Borderlands 4, including mission requirements, strategies, and Legendary gear rewards.
Leader Willem is an easy-to-farm boss in Borderlands 4, with powerful Legendary drops, including the Rainbow Vomit, Firepot, and Zipper. While besting him in combat isn’t difficult, unlocking the boss is another matter entirely. Not only do you have to progress the main story to a certain point, but you also have to complete several side missions before you can fight Leader Willem.
Borderlands 4: Leader Willem Location
You can find Leader Willem in The Excrucible, an Order base in the eastern corner of the Grindstone of the Worthy. However, to unlock the boss, you must complete the 9th main story mission, ‘Unpaid Tab,’ and the following side missions:
- Enter the Electi Part 1
- Enter the Electi Part 2
- The Council Divided
- The Mole’s Gambit
Once you complete ‘Unpaid Tab,’ you can accept these side missions one after another from Levaine. After entering the Excrucible, stick to the leftmost path to reach an area with two vending machines. Drop down into the room on the left to start the Leader Willem boss fight.
How To Beat Leader Willem Boss in Borderlands 4
- Leader Willem has a Shield and an Armor health bar. You can use Shock or Radiation damage to quickly deplete the former and Cryo or Corrosive weapons to melt through the latter.
- Shoot down the Order soldiers spawning in with the boss to focus entirely on him without interruption.
- Leader Willem’s weak spots are his head and backpack; target them to land critical hits.
- The boss can temporarily become invisible, increasing his movement speed. Use AoE attacks to hit him and deactivate his invisibility.
- Leader Willem relies on his handheld weapon and grenades to deal moderate elemental damage. These are effective at close range, so maintain distance and use cover around the room’s periphery to negate incoming attacks.
Leader Willem Legendary Drops and Rewards
Leader Willem drops some of the best Legendary gear in the game, which makes farming him highly lucrative. After you first defeat him, head into the room ahead to open a red chest. Use the purple orb on the right to return to the room with the vending machines. Here, you can repeat the boss fight by paying cash or Eridium at Moxxi’s Big Encore machine. The red chest at the end of the boss arena will also respawn each time.
