The winner of the Pokemon VGC Lille Regional was Marco Silva, with a Ribombee and a Kommo-o on his team. While we have seen some unorthodox picks like Scyther and Rotom-Wash do well in the VGC scene right now, these two Pokemon from Alola have not been staples of the meta for some time. This goes to show how a skilled player like Marco can optimize and pick the Pokemon best suited for their team. So let’s see what these Pokemon brought to the table for Marco for his victory at the Lille Regional.

One look at Marco’s team reveals a ‘DUG’ core (Dragonite-Ursaluna-Gholdengo), which is common in the Regulation H meta. He also has an Incineroar for support as it helps out with Fake Out and Intimidate. However, that’s where the orthodox picks for his team end.

Now, Kommo-o has seen some use in Scarlet and Violet VGC, either with an Iron Defense Body Press set or a Clangorous Soul Throat Spray set. Marco ran neither of them, and instead decided to rely on Throat Spray being activated by Kommo-o’s move Clanging Scales instead. By doing this, Kommo-o gets to focus on being more offensive as the ‘omni-boost’ (+1 in all stats) from Clangorous Soul meant switching it out would be a waste. Additionally, it has a Fire-type Terastallization to get rid of its 4x weakness to Fairy-type attacks.

Speaking of Fairy-types, this brings us to Ribombee. Unlike Kommo-o, Ribombee has had almost no presence in VGC. Its main niche of setting up Sticky Web to lower the opponent’s Speed is more useful in Singles over Doubles. However, Marco took advantage of its other useful traits. Namely, it’s high Speed stat of 124 and its Ability Shield Dust, which prevents the secondary effects of attacks. This includes flinches from Fake Out, guaranteeing that Ribombee could help its allies by setting up Tailwind or lowering the Special Defense of a Pokemon with Fake Tears. Marco also gave his Ribombee a Focus Sash to guarantee that it would survive one hit from full HP.
