Learn all you need to know about your companions in The Outer Worlds 2, including where you meet them, their abilities, and traits.

Companions in The Outer Worlds 2 function similar to how they did in the original. However, the sequel adds more depth to what they can do and to their personal stories. You have six such companions by your side this time around. The first two companions are available by default, and you won’t have to go out looking for them. However, you’ll need to recruit the other four companions from various sections of the game. In the following article, we’ll explore all six of these companions and learn more about each.
All Companions in The Outer Worlds 2
The six companions you can recruit in the game, include the following:
- Niles
- Valerie
- Inez
- Tristan
- Aza
- Marisol
Each companion has their own associated faction that they’re loyal to. Besides that, every companion has certain abilities that they bring to the table during combat scenarios. Let’s take a detailed look at these.
Niles

He belongs to the Earth Directorate faction. You won’t have to recruit him, since he’s available from the beginning of the game’s campaign by default. He has the following traits and ability:
- Spread Out, I’ll Hold ‘Em (Ability): Taunts enemies close to him and fires off three shots, all of which deal increased damage.
- Reflex Amplifier (Trait): Niles can avoid several of the incoming attacks due to a bonus to his evasion.
- Field Tinkering (Trait): You can access a workbench at any time if you have Niles in the party. Simply talk to him to take advantage of this trait.
Valerie

Valerie is the cute flying Android that’s loyal to the Earth Directorate. Similar to Niles, Valerie becomes available as a companion once you complete the prologue section of the game. Here are the robot’s traits and abilities:
- Emergency Protocols (Ability): The android fires several syringes, which heal allies over time and grants them damage reduction for a limited period.
- Life Injection Module (Trait): Valerie will fire a healing syringe toward a party member who’s low on HP.
- Integrated Bypass Repair (Trait): With Valerie in your party, there’s a chance that you won’t use up a Bypass Shant every time you hack a device.
Inez

Belonging to Auntie’s Choice faction, Inez is the first recruitable companion in the game. However, if you want her to join your crew, you’ll need to make certain important choices during the Paradise Island section of the game. You will run into her in the Ministry of Accuracy, a location you might visit while completing side quests. Speak with her as part of the quest, and she’ll eventually return to Fairfield. At that point, you can recruit her as a companion. However, make sure you ask her to join your crew before completing The Saboteur of Paradise main quest. Advancing past this point will permanently boot you out of several side quests. If you haven’t asked Inez to join up by then, she might even perish.
- Ability: Inez’s ability throughout the game will depend on which augments you decide to graft on her. There are two possible outcomes. If you use the Raptidon graft, Inez’s ability will revolve around healing. On the other hand, with a Crabble graft, Inze gains an offensive ability. With it, she fires off plasma shots at enemies, severely damaging them.
- Combat Drugs (Trait): Inez begins encounters with a temporary boost to her accuracy and rate of fire.
- Unlicensed Chemist (Trait): Inez increases the Inhaler charge number you receive from drugs.
Tristan

Allied to the Protectorate faction, you’ll meet Tristan in Free Market Station. enter 2nd Choice saloon and speak with Tristan to begin the Arbitrary Measures quest. You will have to complete this quest if you want to recruit him. To do that, proceed to the marked camp in the Golden Ridge region. Once at the camp, investigate the following with Tristan:
- A corpse at the camp entrance.
- A destroyed automechanical.
- A terminal inside one of the tents.
- The radio tower at the back end of the camp.
- Climb the main building to investigate the communications array.
As you complete the above steps, mechs will attack you. Defeat them and then return to 2nd Choice saloon. The quest ends there, and you get the option to recruit Tristan.
- Judgment (Ability): Charges at an enemy and strikes them with a powerful blow, which also damages nearby enemies. All affected enemies are also knocked back. After the hit, Tristan taunts foes near him.
- Supreme Arbiter Hammer (Trait): Tristan’s hammer becomes a grenade launcher, besides being a melee weapon.
- Observant Adjudicator (Trait): With Tristan in your party, you get a 25% chance of revealing hidden items automatically. This effect only triggers if your Observation is too low to reveal said items by yourself.

Aza

One of the companions in The Outer Worlds 2, Aza belongs to The Glorious Dawn faction. You can recruit her at Golden Ridge. Here’s how:
- Proceed northwest from the Landing Pad to reach the Decommissioned Autonomous Extractorium.
- You can enter this location using 12 lockpicks or the Zyranium Extractorium Key. Alternatively, you can climb up the ladder in the exterior of the building and get in through a ventilation shaft there.
- Aza is trapped inside a chamber, and she’ll yell for help when you get close. Open up the chamber’s door to release her. Now, you can recruit her into your crew.
The following are her traits and abilities:
- Spread the Message (Ability): Aza fires off explosive shots from her wrist-mounted weapon. Enemies hit by these projectiles take heavy damage, besides getting staggered.
- A Chaotic Purpose (Trait): Her ability has a shorter cooldown compared to other companions. Also, it has two charges instead of one.
- Hidden in Plain Sight (Trait): Any faction with whom you have a high or neutral reputation will not consider you an outlaw until you accrue higher than usual bounty with them.
Marisol

The final name in our list of companions in The Outer Worlds 2 is Marisol. She is loyal to the Order of the Ascendant faction. You can recruit her in Golden Ridge. As you progress through the main quest in this area, you will automatically receive a side quest, named Beginning at the Endpoint. As part of the quest, you’ll meet Initiate Alva at Zyranium Manufactory VII. She’s imprisoned when you meet her. You’ll need to conduct an investigation to find out whether Alva is innocent. Here’s what you should do:
- Side with Initiate Alva even if you doubt her innocence. So, make the dialogue choices where you don’t outright blame her.
- Concluding the quest reveals that Initiate Alva is actually an agent named Marisol.
- After a confrontation with Marisol’s enemy, you can go ahead and recruit her.
Now that she’s part of the team, here’s what her traits and abilities look like:
- Torpifying Blast (Ability): Marisol’s attack will stun and immobilize the target temporarily. When this state is active, any attack on that enemy will result in critical strikes.
- Gadget Optimization (Trait): Any kills made by the party will restore a minor amount of energy.
- Threat Analyzer (Trait): Tactical Time Dilation and N-Ray Scanner usage now shows the enemy’s armor, health, and weapon.
Those are all of the companions in The Outer Worlds 2. Make sure you recruit all of them, since they each have additional quests that you can complete. All these quests will grant you additional XP, allowing you to level up quicker.
