Intel Arc 140V is an incredibly powerful iGPU. Intel has improved many aspects, such as shader and compute performance, across the Iris Xe G7 lineup. Arc 140V is available on Lunar Lake processors like the Core Ultra 7 258V and Core Ultra 9 288V, and on MSI Claw, handheld. The competing Radeon 780M is an equally capable GPU, as you can see in the GPD Win 4 handheld. In terms of performance, the guide below uncovers what you can expect from the two.

The Radeon 780M uses the RDNA 2 architecture and the Arc 140V uses the Xe2 Battlemage GPU. Below is a detailed comparison between the two.

Specs Comparison

Render Output Units32(unlisted)
Ray Tracing Cores12 (2nd Gen)8 Ray Tracing Units
Manufacturing Process4nm (TSMC)3nm (TSMC)
Theoretical Performance (FP32)4.1-4.3 TFLOPS~6.24 TFLOPS (approximate)
Power Consumption (TDP)15W (minimum)~15W – 30W
API SupportDirectX 12.2, Vulkan 1.3, OpenCL 2.1DirectX 12.2, Vulkan 1.4, OpenCL 3.0
Memory TypeLPDDR5X-7500 / DDR5-5600 (Shared)LPDDR5x (Shared, up to 16 GB)

Spec-wise, these two architectures are very different, and based on their theoretical performance, we cannot conclusively say which is the winner. That said, the 140V is on the 3nm node from TSMC and is much more efficient than the 780M. As a result, power efficiency will be much higher on the 140V GPU.

When looking at synthetic performance, the 780M is winning on DirectX 11. However, when switching to modern APIs such as DX12, the difference is within 5-10%. Under normal circumstances, you should see indistinguishable gaming performance from the two.

Gaming Performance Comparison

These FPS numbers are sourced from publicly available information across the internet. Most of the settings were low and implemented upscaling, meaning. Games were running at 900p internally and then were outputting a 1080p image.

Forza Horizon 560 FPS59 FPS

Arc 140V has undergone many driver updates. Initially, the performance was abysmal, but with updates, the iGPU delivers excellent performance, beating the 780M in some instances. Intel’s drivers still need work with most games, and once the Intel platform gets more support, the 140V will likely be the better GPU.

Note that these are just a few instances we mentioned; if you look it up, there are many cases where 780M obliterates the 140v, and those are older and popular titles. This is why, even though the 140v wins in most cases, the 780M is the better GPU from a practical standpoint.

Final Verdict on AMD Radeon 780M vs Intel Arc 140V

Despite the 140V clearly winning in most benchmarks, the 780M is the clear winner here. This is not due to performance, but there are several other factors.

For example, many NUCs, gaming handhelds, and laptops using the Intel Lunar Lake platform are ridiculously expensive, and they’re tagged with AI marketing that features gamers won’t even use.

As a result, people drift to cheaper alternatives. Technically, even if the 140V is a better GPU, the winner is the 780M, considering everything.
