In this article, we will see how Kaito Arii took an unconventional Pokemon in Kilowattrel to win the Brisbane VGC Regional.
While Kilowattrel is not a top tier pick for the Pokemon VGC format, it can certainly hold its own. This was on full display in the 2026 Brisbane Regional Championships where Kaito Arii won the tournament with the Generation IX regional bird. So in this article, we will look at this team and the role played by Kilowattrel.

Kaito Arii‘s team consists of Regulation H staples like Amoonguss, Gholdengo, Incineroar, and Ursaluna. He also had a Porygon2, which would form a Trick Room core with Ursaluna. Also, despite this being Kaito Arii’s first Regional win, this is not his first win in a VGC format. He has already won the 2024 World Cup of VGC and the 2023 VGC Pokemon Japan Championships.
This brings us to his Kilowattrel. It has few things that it has going for it that make it useful for VGC. These traits include:
- An Electric/Flying typing which is a great STAB combo with only two weaknesses to Rock and Ice. Especially, since the Flying type gives it an immunity to Ground-type attacks, which is the only weakness of Electric-types.
- A Speed stat of 125, which ties with Weavile and is faster than Pokemon like Ribombee.
- Kilowattrel has the ability Competitive. This raises Kilowattrel’s Special Attack stat by 2 stages if one of its stats is dropped, which is extremely useful in a format where Incineroar exists.
- Finally, it has access to the move Tailwind. This move doubles the Speed of the Pokemon on your side of the field for 4 turns, making it very useful for VGC.
