Expanding your empire across the globe is your goal in Europa Universalis 5, but doing so will not doubt earn the ire of certain parts of the world. You have to be ready for any form of rebellion or conflict, but it’s not always possible to handle it yourself when the territory concerned is on the far end of your empire. This is when you should use vassals.

Vassals are extensions of your empire. These are countries that don’t necessarily fall under your empire, but have sworn allegiance to you. They will help you deal with any issues of importance, and only ask for protection in return.

Vassals are one of the most powerful tools to use in the game. You don’t have any pressure of governing these countries, and you can use them as fodder or as backup in case of any conflict. If this is the first you’re hearing of Vassals in the game, or simply wish to know how to create one for your empire, our guide is here to help.

How To Manage a Vassal in Europa Universalis 5

As stated earlier, vassals are smaller independent nations that govern themselves but pay taxes to you. Emphasis on the word “independent.” These nations are their own entity, and can turn on you if you don’t manage them well. We suggest improving relations with them to keep them loyal to you. The last thing you want is a nation nearby – or perhaps, within your border, revolting against you.

We also suggest only making a vassal near your borders. This will ensure that the vassal is your first line of defense. Furthermore, if they turn on you, you don’t have to worry about infighting of any sort.
