As mentioned earlier, you can easily declare a rival in the game using some in-game modifications. Here are the steps that will help in doing so:
- First, open the Diplomacy menu and locate the rival interface option in the gold-framed icons on the right side.
- Now, click it to access the list of all available nations that you can declare as a rival. Additionally, the menu will also help you check if there are any current rivals.
- From here, you can choose any of the eligible ones, or you can directly use the map to point out that nation.
Once you choose a nation as a rival, you will immediately feel the effects and find yourself on that country’s bad side.

The rival system in the game mirrors real-life diplomacy, where being a country’s opposition comes with consequences. In Europa Universalis V, these outcomes affect trade, alliances, relations, and more. When you declare a country as a rival, your opinion of them immediately drops by 100. If the other nation declares you as a rival in return, you get a double penalty.
This system also allows for strategic alliances, as having a common rival with another nation gives you a +50 opinion bonus toward that country. However, not every nation is available to be a rival. Only countries with a comparable Great Power Score are eligible. Additionally, the number of rivals you can have is limited and depends on your country’s rank.
Can You Remove a Country From Being a Rival in Europa Universalis 5 (EU5)?
If you have mistakenly added a country on the red list or no longer want them as a rival, you have the option to remove them from your rival list. However, while adding a rival is free, removing one costs 25 stability. Therefore, it is important to choose your rivals strategically before adding them to the list.
