The Monster Hunter Stories franchise is easily the most unique spin on the traditional Monster Hunter experience. While the games do embody the same ideals as the mainline Monster Hunter titles, the Stories series does deviate a lot in terms of its gameplay and general progression systems. That said, when it comes to the storytelling, MHS games share a ton of similarities to the mainline titles.

With Monster Hunter Stories 3’s latest trailer, we got our very first look at the Palamutes. And if you’ve played past Monster Hunter games, you will know that Palamutes are one of the staples of the Kamura Village, or MH Rise, as a whole. This also raises the question of whether you need to play MH Rise before jumping on to MHS3, or not.

Thankfully, outside of the Palamutes, MHS3 doesn’t have any ties to Monster Hunter Rise. However, there are still benefits to having played the past games in the series, before you start your journey in Monster Hunter Stories 3.

Is Monster Hunter Stories 3 Connected To Past MH Games?

The simple answer is no, Monster Hunter Stories 3, much like its predecessors, is completely divorced from the mainline games. It’s a standalone story that does share thematic elements of the mainline games, but offers its own unique narrative. That said, much like the past MHS games, Monster Hunter Stories 3 does share a lot of commonalities with some of the recent mainline games.

Firstly, a lot of monsters from Monster Hunter World, Rise, and even Wilds are coming to MHS3. In fact, some of these monsters are already confirmed to be Monsties, such as Rey Dau and Magnamalo. Additionally, MHS3 will also feature Feral Monsters, which is quite similar to Frenzied or Tempered Monsters from Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Stories games feature a turn-based combat system, as opposed to the real-time action in mainline titles. However, the underlying fundamentals of combat such as monster weaknesses, weapon skills, etc., are similar between the mainline and Stories games. As such, if you have played past MH games, you will find some of that knowledge quite useful in MHS3.

Is Monster Hunter Stories 3 A Direct Sequel To MHS2?

No, MHS3, much like the past games in the series, is a standalone adventure. While it does embody the same fundamental elements as MHS2, Stories 3 is a completely new story. As such, it can serve as the perfect starting point for newcomers to the franchise. That said, having played the past games can help the onboarding process of MHS3 significantly less cumbersome.
