There are many Cabinet Actions in (EU5) Europa Universalis 5 that you can put to good use, one of which is Settle the Frontier. However, using this particular action has some hidden side effects that you might not be aware of.
Although the ideal solution would be to wait for it to get fixed in a future update, there are some workarounds you can try until then. Here are some possible fixes to this possible bug.
Settle the Frontier Bug in Europa Universalis 5 (EU5) Explained
Settle the Frontier is an action you can take to control your population growth between an older and a newer region. Essentially, the population from your older location will move to the target location over the course of 10 years.
Players in various forums have speculated that this duration is likely not meant to behave this way, as it causes an immense number of people to flood into the new zone. Many players have said that it leaves their original place to be left with only one person.
This ‘bug’ has made many regions of North America to become unplayable. However, there are some workarounds you can take to avoid this depopulation issue.
Possible Fixes To Settle the Frontier in EU5
You can work around this issue by watching the accepted culture and religion metrics of the target location. As soon as it reached 50% in both, you should prepare a colonial charter for that location.
A location successfully becomes a colony under the conditions mentioned above. Since you started the colonial charter after meeting its succeeding requirements, it will automatically be completed. The new location will become your colony, and it will stop any further inflow of people from the ‘Settle the Frontier’ charter.
PC Only Fix For Settle the Frontier
Follow the given steps to reduce the effects of this action:
- Right-click the game in your library.
- Open the installed files location from here.
- Navigate to the following folder: common\cabinet_actions
- Search for the text file named ‘settle_the_frontier‘.
- Search the file for ‘add_migration’
- Lower the corresponding number to decrease the migration amount per month.
