Learn how to solve the Echoes of Old Battles side quest through combat, clue-based puzzles, and hidden chambers across Qinghe in Where Winds Meet.
You will run into Echoes of Old Battles pretty early in Where Winds Meet. It is in the Verdant Wilds area, right near Battlecrest Slope. This quest gives you a mix of combat, clue-based tasks, and short exploration sections. To start this side quest, head to Battlecrest Slope. There is an eavesdropper waiting near the gate. He seems worried about the Tiger Fort soldiers inside the ruins.
Talking to him starts the quest instantly. If you prefer having the marker show up, you can ask a Wayfarer in Moonveil Mountain or Verdant Wilds to track the quest for you. Once you accept it, the fortress gate becomes the first point of action.
How To Complete the Echoes of Old Battles Side Quest in Where Winds Meet
You go through this quest in several phases, with each one shifting the pace of the game.
Clear the Northern Vow Ruins Training Ground
The moment you open the gate, guards rush at you. Archers stay on higher platforms and poke at you from a distance, so taking them out early makes life easier.
Zhang Bao waits at the centre. He fights with twin axes and uses wide swings that give you enough room to dodge. He even teleports at times, so you stay aware of sudden movement. His main moves include downward chops and twin-thrust attacks. Once he is defeated, you meet Lie Bumie, who is terrified and keeps repeating that he has said nothing about treasure.
Collect the Treasure Map and Light the Braziers
A glowing chest at the back of the field holds the treasure map. The map shows four brazier locations around the ruins. One brazier beside the chest should be lit first. Two may already be lit when you reach them, which changes how long you spend searching. You light the braziers in the following spots:
- Beside the chest
- Roof opposite the main entrance
- A turret connected by a walkway
- Ramparts on the right side of the entrance
Once all four burn, a stone circle rises in the middle. Jump above it and use Mighty Drop to break the mechanism and expose a spiral staircase leading down.
Explore the Catacombs and Learn the Yanyun Oath
You follow the stairs into a quiet hallway. A corpse frozen in a ceremonial pose waits at the end. Interacting with it gives you the Yanyun Oath clue and a gesture linked to that oath.
The eight characters of the oath are: 山 河 寸 土 誓 死 不 易
Keep these in mind for the next puzzle.
Solve the Wall Puzzle Using the Yanyun Oath
From the corpse, turn left and continue deeper. A large chamber sits ahead with a statue in the centre. Using the oath gesture in front of it causes the statue to shift, revealing stone blocks on the walls. Your goal is as follows:
- Pull out blocks showing the eight oath characters
- Push in every other interactable block
Once the eight correct characters glow together, the gate at the back unlocks.
Free the Waterwheel and Enter the Final Chamber
After the gate opens, you duck under a rope trap and reach a small waterwheel area. The wheel is jammed. Head behind the waterfall, interact with the mechanism, and the wheel begins spinning again.
This opens the last stone door. Inside, you will find armor and bodies posed mid-stand, showing the final resistance of the Northern Vow soldiers. A chest at the far end contains the Warriors Pledge item that grants you the Touch of Death mystic skill. Reading the writings on the wall finishes the quest story.
