This may lead to you being confused about this quest. At the start of the quest, you are led to believe that you are going through the test to join the Well of Heaven sect. However, you will soon find out that this is not the case.

How To Join the Nine Mortal Ways Sect in Where Winds Meet
You start by heading to Harvestfall Village and finding San Qian. You can find this area west of Qinghe. Once you find him, he won’t speak to you unless you bribe him. Once you pay for his information fee, he will explain how the Well of Heaven elder recently paid a visit to town.
The elder is now holed up near an elm tree at the top of the village. With this information, you will head up thinking that you’re doing this to join the Well of Heaven sect, but this is all part of the deception. You are about to assist one of the most notorious sects in the game from committing robbery.
Meet the Elder
Head to the location of the elder and ask to join the Well of Heaven sect. He will then give you a task that you must complete before you can join. Suspiciously, your mission is to steal jewelry from his old friend. This sect is all about being heroic and righteous. In spite of the red flag, you still accept the task.
Steal Jewelry Using Wind Sense
Follow the quest marker, which will lead you to the elder’s friend. Once you are close enough, you need to activate Wind Sense. Find the “Large Pile of Jewelry” and choose the “request” option. Here it turns out, you are robbing the real Well of Heaven elder. But that’s not important right now. You need to deliver the jewelry back to the other elder.
Hand Over the Jewelry
Once you give the jewelry you stole, the fake elder will explain everything to you. He confesses that he is not the real elder. In fact, he is a member of the Nine Mortal Ways. This means you just assisted a robbery operation.
With that said, you now have two options. You can call them out for their deception and head back to the Well of Heaven sect. Alternatively, you accept that they tricked you and join the Nine Mortal Ways sect.

The Nine Mortal Ways Sect specializes in mischievous acts. This includes causing trouble in public and stealing from other people. This means you earn reputation by doing morally corrupt things. This includes tricking NPCs, faking messages, and bluffing in card games.
Additionally, wearing disguises also helps gain reputation points. There is a set of side quests related to disguising yourself in Where Winds Meet. This means it’s a good way to earn some reputation for this sect.
