In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Bracers of Defence are a great pair of early game gloves which can be earned in Act 1 – this Guide explains everything you need to know about the Bracers of Defence in BG3.
Bracers of Defence
In Baldur’s Gate 3 the Bracers of Defence are a great early game pair of gloves you can find early on in Act 1. Although they do not require any Armour Proficiencies and can theoretically be worn by any character or class, they are best suited for any cloth-wearing classes such as Barbarians, Sorcerers or Wizards.
This is because the Become the Bulwark bonus feature grants the wearer a +2 to Armour Class so long as the character has not also equipped armor or a shield. This kind of defense boot is critical to any spellcasting class especially, as wearing pieces of armor generally prohibits them from casting spells. Powerful and effective cloth gear is an essential component of their builds.
Here are all the Bracers of Defence features in BG3:
- Armor: Gloves
- Proficiency Requirement: N/A
- Rarity: Rare
- Weight: 0.5 kg
- Value: 160
- Location: Obtained in Necromancers cellar in Blighted Village
- Bonuses:
- Become the Bulwark: You gain a +2 bonus to Armour Class as long as you are not wearing armour or holding a shield.
- All Classes, Companions, and Races Can Use This Item
How to Get Bracers of Defence in Baldur’s Gate 3
In order to get the Bracers of Defence you’ll need to visit the Blighted Village during Act 1, and find your way down into the secret basement of the Necromancer who lived in the Apothecary. You can find the Blighted Village directly west of the Emerald Grove Environs waypoint – or just to the center/west of the Act 1 map as a whole. The Blighted Village has goblins at the main entrance and inside.
The easiest way to access the Apothecary is go to around to the side entrance on the south. Sneak as you come around the corner and you can attack the two goblins outside. Then as you enter, sneak again and attack the three goblins milling around just inside. The building they are standing in front of is the Apothecary. You can go up the stairs and inside without running into the ambush attack from the other goblins.
Inside the Apothecary, behind the counter, you’ll find a Wooden Hatch. This will take you to the normal basement. From the bottom of the ladder, head over to the opposite corner where you will find three crates/boxes stacked together. Hopefully one of your party will have a successful Perception check, which will highlight a lever hidden behind the top crate. Move the box and pull the lever. This will move a nearby bookcase to the side and reveal a secret passage.
Head down the path to find an open space with coffins lying about. If you interact with them, you’ll wake some skeletons which you’ll need to defeat. What you’re looking for beyond them is a magic mirror you’ll need to interact with. Choose a character with high Intimidation for this.

When you interact with the Mirror this will start a dialogue. The Mirror will ask your name and will deny you entry even if you try to trick it. However, you’ll get an Intimidation check where you threaten to smash it. If successful, it will let you through. Once inside, head to the south and up a small set of stairs into an alcove of sorts. You’ll find a Gilded Chest there. It’s not locked or anything – open to find the Bracers of Defence!
