This brand new looter-shooter is getting an official summer release – here is everything we know about The First Descendant!
Looter-shooter games are a wildly popular genre that combines the fast-paced action of shooters with the addictive loop of looting and character progression. It’s a crowded landscape of popular titles, however, and it can be hard for new games to break into the top rankings. The First Descendant aims to do just that this summer, with intense cooperative play, strategic loot management, and continuous character customization. Let’s breakdown everything we know about The First Descendant!
The First Descendant Release Date
The global release date for The First Descendant is officially set for July 2, 2024. Moreover, the game is free-to-play, so there is no initial purchase cost no matter what platform you want to play the game on. Consequently, the game is likely to be heavy with microtransactions for cosmetics and other items.
The First Descendant is developed and published by Nexon Games, a company well known for their MapleStory and Dungeon & Fighter titles. The developers have held several beta tests over the course of the last year. In fact, the final technical test ended on May 26, 2024.
The First Descendant Platforms
The First Descendant will be available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The previously mentioned beta tests were only available for players on PC. Furthermore, if you participated in a beta your progress will not carry over into the full release. Therefore, if you participated in any of the beta tests, anything you unlocked is limited to that testing period. The only exceptions to that are the specific participation rewards that were given out during some of the testing periods.
You can play The First Descendant on the following platforms:
The First Descendant Story and Setting
The core story of The First Descendant pivots around the central premise of both the protagonists and antagonists struggling against the “inherited fate of their predecessors.” This applies to the human race, which is attempting to fight back the gigantic alien Colossi. The Colossi are from another dimension and are invading the human world by breaking through an active portal. There is also another alien race called the Vulgus, who started this war not just for the survival of their species, but also to fulfill the will of their predecessors.
You will take on the avatar of a Descendant, who is known as the “ultimate and most powerful tactical force of humanity.” All Descendants possess a genetic component called ‘Arche’, which allows them to use powerful abilities against all of their enemies. Moreover, while the Vulgus may be weaker than the Colossi, their numbers are seemingly endless.
At the start of the game, the Colossi have conquered most of the planet and humanity has been pushed back to the last continent called Ingris. It will take teams of Descendants to have a hope of finding the Ironheart and using it to close the portal.
The First Descendant Gameplay
The know gameplay of The First Descendant includes some RPG elements, but mostly centers around PvE group-based tactical shooting. The developers at Nexon Games have expressed interest in incorporating PvP multiplayer in the future, but that will not be present at release.
Each Descendant character has their own unique abilities, weapons, and playstyles. Moreover, you will also need to equip your chosen Descendant with effective weapons boosted with appropriate attachments and modifications. Additionally, protective gear will need to be collected to boost your surviability.
Ideally, you’ll likely want to learn the play style of more than one Descendant so that you can fill effective roles in multiple missions. Coordinated teamwork will be imperative, and the needs of the group may change from mission to mission.
Finally, the current end-game mostly centers around instanced dungeons called Reclamation Operations. These experiences appear to be at least somewhat customizable. For example, you can attempt these dungeons solo or with other players. The level of difficulty can be adjusted depending on the number of players participating. Additionally, you’ll also be able to add or remove options that buff enemies and/or nerf you. The higher the levels of difficulty you set for yourself, the better chance you have at getting good loot.
