You do not need to play God of War (2018) before playing God of War Ragnarok. You can enjoy the latter without having played any of the previous games in the franchise. That said, if you are someone who enjoys lore, you may not want to miss out on the interesting plot points and sequences featured in God of War (2018).

God of War Ragnarok is set to make its debut on PC tomorrow, September 19, 2024. PC gamers will finally get to meet Kratos in the ninth installment of the series. The PC release of God of War Ragnarok is taking place two years after its initial release on PS4 and PS5.

How is God of War Ragnarok Connected to God of War (2018)?

The God of War franchise follows the story of Kratos, a Spartan warrior-turned-god. He clashes with various gods from Norse and Greek mythologies, and players get to experience his adventures firsthand.

As of now, there are a total of nine games in the franchise, with God of War Ragnarok being the last. The first six games belong to the Greek mythology era, while the last three, including God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, revolve around Norse mythology.

God of War Ragnarok is the direct sequel to God of War (2018), and it takes up the story three years after the events of the latter. Ragnarok lets you play as both Kratos and his son Atreus. To fully experience the richness of the story and get the most out of it, you may still want to play God of War (2018) before starting the journey of Ragnarok. However, it is not compulsory at all.

God of War Ragnarok does have an option to recap the events of God of War. It covers the primary storyline and all the notable dialogues you should know to make sense of Ragnarok. This brief recap acts as a refresher for those who have already completed the previous game but is especially helpful for new players who just want to get the gist of God of War (2018).

It will release on PC tomorrow, September 19, 2024, along with the Valhalla DLC. The expansion originally released on December 12, 2023, and it was free for all players.
