Do You Need to Watch the Naruto Movies?

There’s no denying that the Naruto movies are fun to watch along with the main series. However, there certainly is no requirement to watch them, given that most of them are considered to be non-canon, i.e., non-essential to the main storyline of the anime. In other words, apart from The Last: Naruto the Movie (2014) and Boruto: Naruto the Movie (2015), the rest of the Naruto movies are considered to be filler and don’t tie in directly with the events of the main series.

As such, fans only need to watch the two aforementioned movies, given that both of them are canonical parts of the show’s timeline. Set after the Fourth Great Ninja War but before Naruto and Hinata’s wedding, The Last: Naruto the Movie provides important context about their relationship. Therefore, watching this movie is highly recommended for fans of their relationship. On the other hand, Boruto: Naruto the Movie sets up the beginning of the Boruto series but is later adapted in more detail in the anime.

That said, you can still opt to watch the rest of the Naruto movies as standalone films. They can be enjoyed separately from the main series and are generally fun to watch since they expand the viewers’ appreciation of several characters.

Should You Watch Boruto Directly After Naruto?

You should certainly watch the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime directly after finishing the Naruto series, including both the classic and Naruto: Shippuden anime. After watching both anime series along with the two cannon movies, you can directly dive into the Boruto anime.

You can start from episode 1 and continue till episode 51, which covers Boruto’s early life, the dynamics within the Naruto household, and several character introductions. Following this, you can either directly watch episodes 52-66 of the anime or Boruto: Naruto the Movie. From thereon, you can continue from episode 67 of the anime and watch it till the end.

Should You Read the Naruto Manga?

Even if you have watched the anime, reading the Naruto manga can certainly be a rewarding experience. While there’s no compulsion, reading the manga can be worth your time for multiple reasons. Firstly, the manga doesn’t include filler arcs that Studio Pierrot often includes in the anime to stretch out storylines. Therefore, if you want to focus on the main storyline of the series without any unnecessary distractions, the manga is the best option.

Additionally, the Naruto manga features some of the most breathtaking art from Masashi Kishimoto, which is bound to enhance your reading experience. This has particularly proven to be true, given that a lot of fans have complained over the years that the anime couldn’t do proper justice to some of Kishimoto’s most iconic panels from the manga. Lastly, the manga also has a faster pacing and features subtle plot details that are often lost in the anime.

Where To Pick Up the Boruto Manga After the Anime?

Interested fans can pick up the Boruto manga from chapter 67 after the conclusion of the anime. About 67 chapters of the Boruto manga were adapted by Studio Pierrot, following which the anime went on an indefinite hiatus.

As of now, there’s no word if the Boruto anime will ever return in the near future. The manga series ended at chapter 80, following which it returned with a sequel titled Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Therefore, if you would prefer to keep up with the current events of the Boruto series, you can start directly from chapter 67 and continue reading till the latest issue of the Two Blue Vortex manga.
