The Demon Slayer series has an array of characters with each one of them having unique abilities and personalities. This has a positive effect on the world-building. In such cases, it’s quite common for fans to choose their favorite character and compare their combat abilities with others.

The topic, “strongest character”, is a hot topic of animanga-related conversations on social media platforms and forums. The Demon Slayer depicts demons as inherently superior to human beings. Therefore, the most powerful being who is the most dangerous on the battlefield will most likely be a demon.

Who is the strongest character in Demon Slayer? In terms of combat abilities, Tanjiro Kamado, in his demon form, is the strongest character. However, if we consider feats, Yoriichi Tsukiguni would be the strongest.

Why Demon Tanjiro Is the Strongest Character in Demon Slayer

We, as readers, only got a glimpse of his abilities in the Demon Slayer manga. What makes him the strongest is his combat prowess, paired with a unique condition that only he and Nezuko managed to achieve as demons. One of the most impressive things about Demon Tanjiro is that he conquered the sun, like his sister.

This means that the Nichirin Blade would be useless against him. The sun is one of the few ways to kill a demon, and Tanjiro managed to conquer that. To add to it, he also had access to the strongest Breathing Technique that was created by Yoriichi himself – the Breath of the Sun. This was one of the most advanced Breathing Techniques specifically designed to kill Kibutsuji Muzan.

If Kanao hadn’t injected him with Wisteria medicine, we would have seen the strongest demon to have ever lived. As time progressed, demons improved their ability to use Blood Demon Art. Additionally, the consumptions of humans made them stronger. If not for Kanao’s intervention, humanity would have been in grave danger since Demon Tanjiro could not have been stopped after a point. This shows that Wisteria was one of the only weaknesses that Demon Tanjiro had.

How Strong Is Kibutsuji Muzan Compared to Demon Tanjiro?

Kibutsuji Muzan is a more complete fighter compared to Tanjro. He spent hundreds of years consuming human flesh and improving his Blood Demon Art abilities. However, Demon Tanjiro had conquered the sun—a goal that Muzan failed to achieve during his lifetime. While Muzan might be more in tune with his abilities, Demon Tanjiro’s enhanced physical abilities and the Breath of the Sun would have been overwhelming for Muzan to handle.

As for battle intellect, both are on a level playing field. Tanjiro, in his human state, showed that he is capable of making the right decisions in crucial moments. His ability to observe the environment and his enemy is unmatched. Muzan could have given Demon Tanjiro a run for his money in the earlier stages.

However, if Tanjiro had spent some time getting accustomed to his abilities, Muzan wouldn’t have stood a chance. The so-called Demon King would have been defeated with ease since Tanjiro would have used his Blood Demon Art, which could complement his swordsmanship.

Demon Tanjiro’s Origin and Final Fate in Demon Slayer

The Demon Slayer Corps put their lives on the line and managed to achieve the impossible—kill Kibutsuji Muzan. It was a hard-fought war and the Corps paid a heavy price. However, the Demon King was dead, but their nightmare didn’t end there. Muzan managed to transfer all of his blood into Tanjiro in his dying moments. This led to Tanjiro becoming a demon who conquered the sun.

He developed demonic appendages and none of the demon hunters could get through to him. Demon Tanjiro even attacked Nezuko. Luckily, the medicines administered to her by Tamayo led to Nezuko developing immunity to demon attacks. Kanao Tsuyuri had a vial of Wisteria concocted by Shinobu Kocho. She was instructed to use this in an emergency situation.

Kanao used the final form of Flower Breathing – Equinoctial Vermillion Eye, enhancing her speed and vision, and allowing her to find an opening. She got close to Demon Tanjiro and injected the medicine into him. This was crucial as it reverted Tanjiro to his human state, ending his brief run as the strongest demon in the series.

How Does Regular Tanjiro Hold Up to the Strongest Character in Demon Slayer?

Tanjiro, in his human form, has absolutely no chance against the demonic version of himself. No matter how powerful he is in his human form, the demon equivalent will be far superior in every way. Demon Tanjiro will also have access to Blood Demon Art while being able to use the Breath of the Sun. This combination will be overwhelming for Tanjiro since he barely managed to defeat the Upper Moon 3 demon despite having Giyu Tomioka’s help.

Conclusion

If we look at just the feats, then Yoriichi would earn the title of the strongest character. This is because he managed to nearly defeat Muzan all by himself. However, Demon Tanjiro is technically the strongest character in the series, as explained in this article. Furthermore, this character didn’t receive enough time in the series to cultivate his newfound powers. If Yoriichi managed to do so, then humanity would be doomed.

Luckily Kanao’s efforts not only saved Tanjiro, but also the entire human race. Demon Tanjiro is the strongest Demon Slayer character in the anime and manga series.
