The timeline of Jujutsu Kaisen can be as complex as its story and power system. So, when exactly does Jujutsu Kaisen take place?

Jujutsu Kaisen officially started in June 2018 with the introduction of Yuji Itadori, but the story began 1000 years ago. To help fans better understand this, we have prepared a chronological timeline of the events in the series.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Timeline

1) 710-784 CE – Jujutsu Sorcery is Established

Known as the Nara Period, this was the time when Master Tengen officially set up the Jujutsu Society. Since Curses were running rampant, Tengen also began setting the morals of protecting non-sorcerers at all times and laying down a proper system.

2) 794-1185 CE – Sukuna’s Life

Called the Heian Era and Golden Age of Jujutsu, it featured Sukuna’s rise to power as the King of Curses. This was when the foundations of the Gojo Clan and Zenin Clan were laid down.

Towards the end of this period, Sukuna is sealed, though the details of his defeat are never revealed in Jujutsu Kaisen.

3) 1596-1868 CE – Kenjaku’s Plan

During the Keicho Era, Kenjaku finally began to put his plan into action. He wished to stop Tengen’s actions of creating barriers for the Jujutsu World and create a new entity by merging the deity with humanity.

To achieve this, Kenjaku killed the Star Plasma Vessel and Six Eyes, but he failed as they were just reborn. Changing his approach, Kenjaku began searching for the Prison Realm.

4) 1869-1989 – Cursed Wombs and Toji Zenin

Noritoshi Kamo, known as the most evil sorcerer in Jujutsu History was possessed by Kenjaku during the start of this period. Due to his infamous experiments that made wombs from the combination of Humans and Curses, he created the Death Paintings.

Though his exact birth year is unknown, Toji Zenin was also born on December 31 of the mid-late 1900s. Despite his heavenly restriction of not sensing Cursed Energy, became extremely strong and was known as the Sorcerer Killer.

5) 1989-1990 – Gojo and Geto’s Birth

On December 7, 1989, Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen was born. He completely changed the power hierarchy by having both Six Eyes and the Limitless.

Suguru Geto was born on February 3, 1990.

6) 2002-2003 – The Protagonists Are Born

During these years, Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and Megumi Fushigoro were all born.

7) 2006-2007 – Hidden Inventory Arc

Gojo and Geto are assigned to protect the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai. However, Toji interfered and killed Riko. This triggered Gojo’s growth and he killed the Sorcerer Killer.

After Riko’s death, Geto loses sight of the Sorcerer’s mission. He began seeing humans as inferior and left Jujutsu Society.

8) 2010-2017 – Events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0

This part of Jujutsu Kaisen is a prequel before the main series. In 2010, Rika Orimoto died a mysterious death and was turned into Cursed Spirit due to Yuta’s unresolved feelings.

Suguru Geto discovered the existence of the Special Grade Cursed Spirit Rika in 2017. To capture her, he carried out the “Night Parade of a Hundred Demons” on December 24, 2017, but eventually failed and lost his life.

9) June 2018 – Start of Jujutsu Kaisen

The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen was set in June 2018 and introduced Yuji Itadori, a boy who came to possess the King of Curses, Sukuna. When Sukuna had been defeated in the Heian Era, he was sealed with his 20 fingers being hidden away as Cursed Objects.

Yuji found this finger and was forced to eat it to save Megumi by defeating enemy Curses. Due to this, he unintentionally ended up becoming Sukuna’s vessel 1000 years after the King of Curses’ “death.” To contain this powerful entity and contribute towards societal good, Yuji began training as a Jujutsu Sorcerer after this.

10) October 31, 2018 – The Shibuya Incident

Kenjaku, as well as other powerful Curses, started their plan to take down humanity. Recognizing that it was impossible to kill the Six Eyes, they tricked Gojo into getting sealed inside the Prison Realm.

11) November 2018 – Culling Games

In November 2018, Kenjaku began the Culling Games in order to prepare the non-sorcerers to merge with Tengen.

Yuta was appointed as Itadori’s executioner but ended up bonding with him. Along with them, the rest of our main cast planned to free Gojo and stop Kenjaku’s Culling Games.

In search of greater power and gaining revenge for the abuse both she and her sister went through, Maki also massacred the Zenin Clan. Following this, she entered the Culling Games.

12) November 19-20, 2018 – Gojo Returns

Towards the end of the Culling Game Arc, Sukuna switched bodies to Megumi after seeing the potential of his Ten Shadows technique.

Right when things were looking bad for the heroes, Angel used Jacob’s Ladder to negate other Curses and freed Gojo from the Prison Realm.

With the King of Curses and the Strongest Sorcerer facing each other, they set the date for their decisive battle that would determine the fate of Jujutsu Society.

13) December 24, 2018 – The Shinjuku Showdown Arc

Gojo and Sukuna have an intense battle with the stakes higher than ever before. Following an epic clash, Sukuna is eventually able to kill Gojo using Maharoga’s help.

As soon as this happened, the rest of our cast jumped into battle to face their enemy. While Yuta and Takaba were able to trick Kenjaku and defeat him, the rest of the Sorcerers faced heavy losses to Sukuna.

Nevertheless, after heavily damaging him, Yuji successfully ended Sukuna with a Black Flash.

How Much Time Does Jujutsu Kaisen Cover?

The main arcs of Jujutsu Kaisen take place over only six months. This is since Yuji entered the school in June 2018 and the final battle took place on December 31 of the same year.

However, when considering all the impactful events and moments of the series, Jujutsu Kaisen and the concept of Sorcery itself are covered over 1000 years. Hence, while the timeline of the primary story is fast-paced, its consequences are far-reaching.

Does Jujutsu Kaisen Have a Timeskip?

There are no significant time skips in Jujutsu Kaisen since most of the series is covered over a short span. However, the skip that affected fans the most was the one-month time lapse from when Gojo returned to his battle with Sukuna.

Despite coming back to a lot of changes in the series, we never get to see his reactions to any of them. Additionally, there were no training arcs or plans shown during this period, and were mostly just narrated during the Shinjuku Showdown itself.

When Does Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Take Place?

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is set primarily during 2017 when Yuta Okkotsu joins Jujutsu High as its newest entrant. It is a prequel to the main Jujutsu Kaisen and follows the events one year prior.

The movie mainly introduced Yuta, one of the strongest sorcerers in the series, as well as the return of Geto Suguru.

Additionally, the movie also flashes back to 2010, when Yuta lost his friend Rika, and unwittingly turned her into a Cursed Spirit.

When Did Jujutsu Kaisen Anime and Manga Begin?

The Jujutsu Kaisen manga began publication on March 5, 2018, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The series concluded its publication on September 30, 2024, with 30 volumes.

Soon after its release, Jujutsu Kaisen found massive popularity among fans. Due to this, it was adapted into an anime by MAPPA Studios. The Jujutsu Kaisen anime began airing on October 3, 2020.

Its movie prequel—Jujutsu Kaisen 0, came out on December 24, 2021. The movie was based on the 4-chapter manga prequel which was published on April 28, 2017, before Jujutsu Kaisen had started.

Conclusion

Jujutsu Kaisen takes place in a modern setting but seamlessly blended with several ancient concepts and powers. The series starts and finishes in a short period, showing the urgency and intensity of its events.

Through this timeline, we hope to provide you with an idea of how far back the plot dates back and why it was able to integrate its different themes so well.
