XL Candy in Pokemon GO lets you power up Pokemon beyond Level 40. This raises their CP and boosts their battle performance. XL Candy helps to level up Pokemon to Level 50. It’s similar to regular Candy, but there are differences. You can collect XL Candy by hatching, catching, walking with, and transferring Pokemon. Also, you can convert regular Candy into XL Candy, though it takes 100 regular Candies to get one XL Candy.

Converting is helpful but not the most efficient way to get XL Candy. Trainers often use a mix of methods to collect it.

XL Candy unlocks at Trainer Level 31. It lets you increase a Pokemon’s CP past its usual limit. This is especially helpful in battles like the Master League.

Using XL Candy is simple. Open your storage and select the Pokemon you want to power up. Be careful if you have several versions of the same Pokemon. Check your resources and find your XL Candy, regular Candy, and Mega Energy (if applicable) for that Pokemon.

Tap the “Power up” button. The game shows how much XL Candy, Stardust, and regular Candy you need. Scroll down if needed, to start using XL Candy. Once ready, confirm your choice. The Pokemon’s CP will increase. Rare Candy XL works a bit differently, and it’s in the “Other Items” tab. You can convert the Rare Candy XL into XL Candy for a Pokemon of your choice.

In Pokemon GO, you can get XL Candy in several ways. Catching regular Pocket Monsters might give you 1 to 3 XL Candy, while evolved Pokemon always reward at least 2 XL Candy. Legendary and Mythical Pokemon can provide you a minimum of 3 XL Candy. Catching a Raid Boss can also give you XL Candy.

Trading Pocket Monsters sometimes gives XL Candy, and the odds improve if the Pokemon being traded had been caught far apart. Hatching eggs is another way, with longer hatch distances resulting in more XL Candy. If you transfer Pokemon to Professor Willow, you will get 1 XL Candy.

Walking with your Buddy can reward XL Candy after covering certain distances. You can convert 100 regular Candy into 1 XL Candy, which is useful for clearing excess Candy but not very efficient. Events like Community Days often offer extra XL Candy rewards through bonuses such as increased trade or raid rewards.

Rare XL Candy is another option. You can use it for any Pokemon, but it’s hard to find, usually appearing as rewards for leveling past 40 or from rare raids. Remember, you can only start collecting XL Candy after reaching Trainer Level 31.

How Much XL Candy Is Needed To Max Out a Pokemon

To fully level a Pokemon from Level 40 to 50, you’ll need 296 XL Candy and 250,000 Stardust.

Each level past 40 needs a set amount of XL Candy:

  • Level 41: 10 XL Candy
  • Level 42: 10 XL Candy
  • Level 43: 12 XL Candy
  • Level 44: 12 XL Candy
  • Level 45: 15 XL Candy
  • Level 46: 15 XL Candy
  • Level 47: 17 XL Candy
  • Level 48: 17 XL Candy
  • Level 49: 20 XL Candy
  • Level 50: 20 XL Candy

This applies to all Pokemon. However, Shadow Pokemon need more (360 XL Candy), and Purified ones need less (272 XL Candy).

Converting regular Candy to XL Candy is costly, requiring 29,600 Candies to make 296 XL Candy. It’s usually better to catch, trade, and transfer to gather XL Candy.
