Domain Expansions are one of the most formidable techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen and are considered the pinnacle of Jujutsu Sorcery. Due to their high difficulty, they are mostly used by characters as their finishing attack and contribute to some of the most exciting moments of the series. So, what are Domain Expansions in Jujutsu Kaisen?
A Domain Expansion projects a Jujutsu user’s cursed energy inside a controlled space while allowing them to amplify their techniques. Let us dive deeper into this.
What Are Domain Expansions in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Most Jujutsu Sorcerers are born with their own Innate techniques – unique cursed techniques engraved onto the user. A Domain Expansion makes use of this technique while increasing the area and potency of its impact.
Innate Domains are the foundations of Innate techniques and represent a metaphysical space reflecting the mind and soul of an individual. The Domain Expansion is a physical construction of this metaphysical space and closes off other entities using Barriers.
Hence, through hand signs specific to each user, their Innate Domains are expanded into a separate space powered by Cursed Energy. The Jujutsu user is in complete control of any entity trapped within the barriers of their Domain, and the abilities they utilize are connected to their Innate techniques.
It should be explicitly stated that while most Sorcerers are born with Innate techniques, hardly any of them can use a Domain Expansion due to the complications of constructing one.
Types of Domain Expansions
There are multiple types of Domain Expansions, each with its distinctive features. These include:
1) Lethal Domains
The Lethal Domain is the reason why most users activate the Domain Expansion. As the name suggests, this Domain provides a sure-hit effect to any entity trapped inside the Domain and allows the Sorcerer to be in complete control of using their cursed technique successfully.
These are notorious for their difficulty since creating artificial space and erecting barriers require a tremendous amount of energy and skill. In Jujutsu Kaisen, only Sukuna and Kenjaku have the ability to create Domains without barriers and still retain the sure-hit ability.
2) Incomplete Domains
Due to their complexity, Domains can end up being incomplete several times. When made without barriers or incorporating the user’s techniques, Domains can lose their guaranteed hit. This classifies them as incomplete. For instance, Megumi Fushiguro’s Chimera Shadow Garden against the Finger Bearer did not have a sure-hit effect and was an Incomplete Domain.
3) Non-Lethal Domains

Domain Expansions have several advantages to any user managing to pull them off. They are guaranteed to hit the target and greatly increase the power of the user’s technique. It is nearly impossible for a target to break out of a Domain once stuck inside without outside interference.
Having a Domain Expansion provides a psychological advantage since it acts as the trump card of any Sorcerer and can be used when the tides of the battle are turning. If enemies also know the Sorcerer can use Domain Expansion, they will fight cautiously.
However, this does not mean that a Domain Expansion is free from flaws. It requires a great amount of proficiency and Cursed Energy to construct. Due to this, if the target somehow manages to come out alive after a Domain Expansion, they can easily fight the exhausted user.
Additionally, Domains are mainly made to focus on the entities inside and not the ones outside. Hence, their barriers can be broken by a powerful attack outside of their space. We saw this happen when Yuji Itadori broke into Mahito’s Domain to save Nanami.
Apart from very few Sorcerers, most cannot use the Domain Expansion consecutively. Therefore, it is a high-risk, high-reward move that has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages.
How Can You Counter a Domain Expansion?
While all hope may seem lost for a person stuck inside a Domain Expansion, there are also methods to counter it. Anti-domain techniques such as the Simple Domain and Hollow Wicker Basket work best to nullify the guaranteed hit of one’s Domain.
The most frequently shown way of countering a Domain Expansion is by engaging in a Domain Clash. This would mean that a Sorcerer responds to a Domain Expansion by using their own Domain. When this takes place, the more superior Domain will form, as seen in Gojo’s battle against Jogo.
However, at times when both Domains in the clash are even – Gojo vs Sukuna in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, the battle resumes with Incomplete Domains.
Strongest Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen
Fans often have heated debates regarding the strongest Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen. This is mainly due to the clashing Domains of Gojo Satoru and Ryomen Sukuna.
Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine is an open Domain that can cleave, dismantle, and destroy anything in its radius. Since it has no barriers, he can also extend this to a radius of up to 200 meters, as shown in the Shibuya Arc.
Gojo’s Domain is the Unlimited Void and is a closed-off technique with an outer shell. This puts the target inside his Limitless technique where they are dragged through a continuous void of space and the galaxies. This overloads the target’s mind while rendering them helpless and incapacitated.
Since Gojo’s technique is focused on a specific area, many believe it to be more refined with a complex concept. Sukuna covers a larger area and is much more destructive. When Gojo and Sukuna fought, their Domains canceled each other out, but fans still argue regarding the powers of their respective Domain Expansions.
