Imane Anys, also known as Pokimane, is a Moroccan-Canadian streamer and gamer. “Pokimane” is a combination of Pokemon and her name Imane.
Imane Anys is a renowned Twitch streamer, famous for her gaming streams. She plays games like League of Legends and Fortnite. Over the last few years, she has become one of the most recognizable streamers on the internet. Her name “Pokimane” is a blend of Pokemon (Japanese media franchise) and her first name Imane.
Pokimane was initially pursuing Chemical Engineering but later dropped out of college to pursue streaming full-time. In 2017, she gained 270,000 followers on Twitch bringing her channel in the top 100 most-followed on the platform. Due to this growth, she was awarded the “Streamer of the Year” at the Shorty Awards. Imane also had a cameo in the League of Legends trailer, announcing a new mode in the game
How To Pronounce “Pokimane”
Back in 2016, Pokimane appeared on YouTube to clarify how her name is pronounced. Many people mispronounce or are confused about her name. She said that it is pronounced “Pokemon” and not “Pok-eye-mane”. In the video, Imane said,
“So my IGN is P-O-K-I-M-A-N-E and it’s actually pronounced Pokemon, not poke-eye-mane because it’s supposed to be a combination of my name, Imane, and the game Pokémon because I love Pokémon.”
Pokimane added
“I always thought that it would be sort of obvious but usually when I tell people that that’s what it is they are like ‘woahh!’… And I noticed how someone would initially pronounce it, if they read it, and they only speak English, so I don’t mind if people mispronounce it.”
How Did Imane Anys Become So Famous?
Pokimane started streaming in 2013 and by 2018 she was well-known for her League of Legends and Fortnite streams. As she rapidly grew her following, Twitch selected Anys as one of their 15 ambassadors at the 2018 TwitchCon event. Twitch again selected her as a partner for their Twitch Creator Camp. This camp consisted of a series of broadcasts and articles compiled to encourage content creators to build a successful channel.
In the year 2019, Pokimane had gained 2.7 million followers which made her the 14th most-followed streamer on Twitch. In March 2020, Anys signed a massive $62 million exclusive contract with Twitch. This contract was signed for 2 years. In 2022, she became an independent streamer after her contract period ended. Currently, her Twitch channel boasts a total of 9,327,595 followers with 90 million hours watched.
Imane has been active on YouTube as well. She boasts a whopping 6.62 million subscribers on her main YouTube channel. Her most watched video is titled “8 YR OLD gets CHEATED on by Fortnite Girlfriend! Pokimane Random Duos!” and has a total of 17 million views. Her other channels include; “Sweet n Sour Podcast”, “imane”, “Pokimane Too”, and “Pokimane VODS”.
