Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has captivated fans for several years through its intense fights, loveable characters, and world-building. During the Wano Arc, Luffy was up against his biggest challenge as he faced one of the Emperors of the Sea – Kaido. Having already lost to the villain, their decisive battle had fans fearing for the protagonist’s life. So, did Luffy die in One Piece?

Luffy did not die in One Piece but revived, unlocking the true potential of his Devil Fruit against Kaido. Let us explore this closer.

Why Did Fans Think Luffy Died?

Luffy’s main opponent in the Wano Arc was Kaido, a character considered the strongest creature in the world. Kaido’s Devil Fruit allowed him to transform into a fearsome Azure Dragon with enhanced powers. He could also cause mass destruction using his ability to shoot out fire blasts.

With his Thunder Bagua and Supreme King Haki, Kaido was easily able to defeat Luffy during their first meeting. However, as the Wano Arc neared its conclusion and Kaido’s forces crumbled, Luffy had his revenge battle against the antagonist.

Using Snake Man, Elephant Gatling, and various other Gear Four abilities, Luffy seemed to be evenly matched with Kaido. At this point, a CP0 agent intervened in their fight, which allowed Kaido to unintentionally beat Luffy down drastically.

At this point, Momonosuke observed that he could no longer hear Luffy’s voice, hinting that the character had died. While we found in Chapter 1044 of One Piece that Luffy was still alive and used Gear Five, fans still theorize that the original Luffy is dead.

This is because right before Luffy had revived, Zunesha pointed out that Joyboy had returned. Following this, Luffy returned with his white Gear Five form.

Due to this, fans believe that Luffy had really died after losing to Kaido and was reborn due to his Devil Fruit. Hence, the current Luffy is a reincarnated version of Joyboy or Nika the Sun God. While this theory does hold some weight, there has been no explicit evidence to prove that the real Luffy had died back in Wano.

What Is Luffy’s Real Devil Fruit?

For most of One Piece, fans believed that Luffy’s Devil Fruit was the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which gave him the abilities of rubber. However, after his fight with Kaido, Luffy could awaken the true powers of his Devil Fruit.

Luffy’s real Devil Fruit is the Mythical Zoan-type fruit called Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. This allows him to embody the Sun God, Nika. The fruit grants Luffy the ability to be his freest self while being able to defy the laws of nature. He can materialize objects and turn any of his surroundings into rubber, including elements like lightning.

Due to the unlimited potential of this fruit, the World Government considered it to be the most dangerous and hid it under the name of the Gomu Gomu no Mi.

Did Luffy Defeat Kaido in One Piece?

Upon awakening his true Devil Fruit, Luffy titled it Gear Five and was able to stun Kaido with the flexibility of his attacks. By manipulating the entire battlefield in a cartoonish manner, Kaido was left with no answers to Luffy’s strength.

While Kaido himself did not want to be tied down by the Marines and live a free life, Luffy wished to chase his freedom while making others happy as well. When questioned by Kaido regarding what world he would create, he replied that he would make a world where his friends could eat as much food as they wanted.

With this renewed resolve, Luffy knocked Kaido down with a huge and devastating punch that sent the Emperor crashing into the depths of Wano. Through this, Luffy was finally able to defeat Kaido in One Piece.

What Did Luffy’s Revival Signify?

Luffy’s revival and unlocking of the powers of Nika finally showcased how his neverending spirit of freedom and independence had translated into greater power on the battlefield. As he fought for the people of Wano even without knowing about his hidden power, Luffy had constantly put his life on the line for the happiness of those around him.

His revival signified the change in the power hierarchy of One Piece, where a boy with rubber abilities was finally able to stand on par with the greatest powers of the world. Even going past just his strength, the “Drums of Liberation” that beat for Luffy’s awakening were extremely fitting since they signified fighting back against the oppressor.

As a person who fought from the very beginning of One Piece to bring about change through his resilience, individuality, and dreams, Luffy’s revival was the defining moment where his path to becoming the Pirate King was finally clear.

Conclusion

Luffy’s apparent death in One Piece led to heavy speculation among the fandom but also resulted in the most significant revelation of the series. His awakening had solidified his role as the embodiment of freedom. This was a much-awaited payoff for a protagonist who faced several struggles to uphold his ideals, even at the cost of shaking up the entire world.
