AAA video games are titles made by big studios with a massive budget. They’re expected to make full use of the graphical and technological advancements of the day. These titles have impressive graphics, massive storylines, and detailed environments or in-game worlds. However, AAA gaming in the last decade has been somewhat disappointing, with several titles ending up as commercial failures and receiving negative reviews.

Nevertheless, we have some highly anticipated titles to look forward to in the coming year. Now, you may already know about some of the major ones, like Grand Theft Auto VI and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, there are a number of other AAA games to be released in 2025, that might be a little under the radar.

In this article, we’ve prepared a list of seven such titles that you should check out.

Best Upcoming AAA Games in 2025 You Should Know About

1. Borderlands 4

2K’s Borderlands series is renowned for its space western setting, colorful characters, and satirical humor. The mainline games in this series are all open-world looter shooters with some RPG mechanics. Now, every title brings us four unique playable characters, and lets us explore different regions of a planet called Pandora.

However, the upcoming game, which 2K has revealed little about, seems to be straying away from one of these things. Instead of Pandora, the game takes place in a new planet. If you’re really hyped about the project, you can check out some of the concept art as no screenshots are available currently. Borderlands 4 is expected to release on 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

2. Civilization VII

Sid Meier’s Civilization is another popular series currently owned by 2K. Many regard this game as the pioneer of the 4X strategy genre, and for good reason. You have the option to play as one of many historical civilizations, build cities, expand your borders, research new tech, and even wage war.

If you’re new to it, there’s nothing to worry about at all. These are turn-based strategy games, so the usual rush associated with RTS games don’t apply. Every title brings new features, and gameplay mechanics. Sometimes, we are even treated with new leaders.

Pick up any Civilization title and the tutorial will do a good enough job to teach you everything you need to get going. Civilization VII, the upcoming title in the series, is set to launch on February 11, 2025, for Windows, macOS, and Linux PCs, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

3. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

Death Stranding has one of the most unique settings among open-world titles, and a distinctive gameplay to match. You’re a porter in this post-apocalyptic world and while there’s definitely some futuristic tech, the plot also deals with parapsychic elements. Despite being a walking simulator at its core, it’s engaging, and you’ll seldom have a dull moment.

Death Stranding 2 brings back the usual cast and some new characters. The story of the game is not revealed as of yet. It’s going to be released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2025.

4. DOOM: The Dark Ages

The DOOM series is often regarded as the precursor to the modern FPS genre and thankfully, the series is still alive and well. Now, most DOOM titles take place in the future, where you can employ sci-fi tech to dispatch countless infernal demons. However, with DOOM: The Dark Ages, the series will be taking you to a medieval setting.

Now, this means there will be a lot more melee weapons than usual, but guns aren’t completely going away either. As for the plot, you’ll be exploring the origin story of the Doom Slayer this time. DOOM: The Dark Ages is coming out for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.

5. Ghost of Yotei

Ghost of Yotei is the upcoming sequel to Sucker Punch’s 2020 open-world action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima. It takes place over 300 years after the first game, so there’s no Mongol invasion this time, and Jin Sakai won’t be returning either. What you’ll get instead is a Hokkaido setting, and you’ll get to play as a female warrior called Atsu.

,While the narrative in Ghost of Tsushima had little to do with historical accuracy, it did not lack in the gameplay department. GoT’s gameplay is exhilarating and makes you feel like a samurai, while the breathtaking visuals almost transport you to Japan. With Ghost of Yotei, we’re expecting further enhancements in both these aspects. Ghost of Yotei will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, set to launch sometime in 2025.

6. Mafia: The Old Country

Mafia: The Old Country seems to be taking the iconic Mafia franchise back to its roots. As the name suggests, the game takes place in Sicily, and explores the origin of the Mafia, in the early-20th century. We don’t know any more about the game as there’s only been a teaser trailer so far. However, what we know is that it’s coming out in 2025 for PCs, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

It’s going to be a linear experience, much like the original Mafia game, and the story may even tie in as a prequel to the series. The story will take place in the town San Celeste. We only got a glimpse of this town in Mafia II.

7. Pokémon Legends: Z-A

A new Pokémon title is always big news, especially for Pokémon fans around the globe. Now, the last few titles may have been a little repetitive, but there are some exciting details about this upcoming title. Firstly, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the second Pokémon Legends title after 2022’s Legends: Arceus. Secondly, the game’s world will be set in Lumiose City, which is basically Pokémon’s version of Paris.

Other than the Mega Evolution mechanic(introduced in X and Y) the trailer did not reveal much. You’ll be able to play Pokémon Legends: Z-A on your Nintendo Switch in 2025.
