The United States has implemented various bans on popular games and mobile applications due to national security and data privacy concerns recently. The focus is primarily on applications owned by ByteDance, the parent company of the popular social media app TikTok. Among the bans implemented, notable gaming titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) and Marvel Snap have been affected too.

In this article, we will break down the details of this crackdown on these games and explore the reasons behind them.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, developed by MOONTON, a subsidiary of ByteDance, gained widespread popularity in Southeast Asia but became a casualty of the U.S. government’s heightened concerns over data privacy and national security due to its connections with ByteDance.

The ban, initially targeting TikTok, extended to other ByteDance-owned applications, including MLBB, fearing data access by Chinese authorities. As a result, U.S. players found themselves unable to access MLBB, with developers referring to it as a “temporary suspension” and exploring ways to bring the game back.

Marvel Snap

Marvel Snap, published by Nuverse, another ByteDance subsidiary, faced a ban due to broader national security concerns affecting all ByteDance applications, similar to MLBB. Players attempting to access Marvel Snap received messages that the game was temporarily unavailable in the U.S. The developers are actively working to resolve the situation.

Other ByteDance Games

Several other ByteDance-associated games also faced bans in the U.S. due to similar concerns. Watcher of Realms, developed by MOONTON, was removed from app stores, and Mission EVO, another Nuverse game, also became inaccessible to U.S. players.

TikTok Ban and Its Implications

The ban on TikTok stemmed from ongoing national security concerns related to its parent company, ByteDance. The U.S. government mandated ByteDance to either sell TikTok’s U.S. operations to a non-Chinese entity or face a ban, which, in turn, extended to other ByteDance properties, including several games.

The primary reason for the ban was national security concerns regarding data access by Chinese authorities. President-elect Donald Trump indicated he might grant a reprieve to TikTok, potentially allowing for negotiations to find a resolution.
