4 One Piece Pirates Everyone Fears
One Piece has its fair share of monstrous individuals with a commanding presence due to their Devil Fruits, Haki, strength, and fleets. Pairing this with their actions in the series, these characters instill fear in the hearts of most.
1) Rocks D. Xebec
Rocks D. Xebec stands as one of the most terrifying figures in One Piece history. Leading the Rocks Pirates, he was infamous all throughout the world for his ruthlessness and exploits.
Xebec sought to rule the world and would pay no heed to those caught up in his conquests. For this purpose, he didn’t hesitate to attack the nobles and innocents at God Valley either, a move which caused Roger and Garp to ally. Xebec’s vicious personality is best displayed through the notable members of his crew – Big Mom and Kaido.
Despite having come from the same group, Whitebeard was outspoken about his hatred of the crew and its culture of evil, pushing him to create a more familial crew.
2) Blackbeard
Blackbeard is one of the most feared and hated One Piece characters in the show. He is an extremely self-serving pirate who is willing to betray anyone if that leads to his glory. For the sake of obtaining the Dark-Dark Fruit, Blackbeard tricked Whitebeard’s crew and killed Thatch.
Later in the series, he caught Ace and handed him to the World Government, indirectly killing him, and then directly killed Whitebeard himself later. Blackbeard inspires fear due to his unpredictability, since no one knows what he’s fully capable of. His crew has been responsible for toppling formidable figures such as Garp, while inching closer towards Laugh Tale.
Should Blackbeard find the One Piece, both characters and fans fear the world that would be created from his dishonest and brutal nature.
3) Kaido
The King of the Beasts, Kaido, remains one of the series’ most fearsome figures despite having lost to Luffy. His large physique coupled with the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu made him recognized as the strongest creature in the world.
Kaido always seeks more strength and would stop at nothing to achieve it. He enslaved the people of Wano, ran the SMILE fruit operation, and caused all sorts of atrocities in the series. His brutal beatdowns of Luffy, who would have undoubtedly died if not for awakening his Devil Fruit, stands as a testament to his savagery.
4) Big Mom
Charlotte Linlin, better known as Big Mom, was yet another Yonko like Kaido who was feared throughout the seas. As the holder of the Soul-Soul Fruit, her ability terrifyingly allowed her to control the souls of people who felt fear towards her.
This ability was further boosted by Big Mom’s enormous appearance and hunger pangs, which would cause her to go on a rampage. Her superiority and her powerful crew consisting of pirates such as Katakuri made the strongest figures in the world think twice before fighting her.
Big Mom may be more sympathetic than other characters on this part of the list since she was born with her destructive nature. Nevertheless, it still doesn’t excuse how chilling her presence in both anime and manga can be.
4 One Piece Pirates No One Takes Seriously
To balance out the fearsome characters in the series, there is an equal number of less intimidating figures. This may be because they are meant to be comedic in nature or because they simply pale in comparison to other strong pirates.
1) Buggy
Buggy the Clown is the main comic relief character of One Piece despite being an antagonist initially. Following his loss against the Straw Hats in the Orange Town Arc, Buggy’s Life has been full of accidental success. His antics in Impel Down and the Marineford War allowed him to amass a large crew and become a Warlord of the Sea.
As the series proceeded, Buggy’s luck only came into play more, giving him accomplishments he didn’t earn and raising his position to a Yonko. Scenes such as him getting bullied by Mihawk and Crocodile add a humorous element during the intense events of the series.
Hence, Buggy’s time as a serious threat is long past, but he is thriving in his role of a pirate we simply can’t take seriously but who still gains glory.
2) Usopp
Usopp is a beloved member of the Straw Hat Pirates who has come a long way. While he was very cowardly during his introduction, he has grown quickly while honing his skills as a sniper. Due to this, Usopp has managed to stay useful to Luffy despite being less powerful than all his peers.
At the same time, Usopp’s frightened nature still slips out ever so often, willing to do anything to get out of trouble. His relationship with Luffy is hilarious, and his own exaggerated expressions highlight his character. Hence, fans are undoubtedly emotionally invested in Usopp, but no one ever takes his presence during high-stakes battles seriously.
3) Don Krieg
Don Krieg is a unique addition to this list, particularly because he was initially a feared figure in East Blue. He was overconfident and cruel with others, as seen during his attack on the Baratie. Unfortunately, he soon became a symbol of inadequacy, overshadowed by those stronger than him.
When the Krieg Pirates were facing the Straw Hats, Mihawk intervened and proceeded to leave a lasting impression. Following the Warlord’s battle against Zoro, Krieg himself became an underwhelming figure. Posing little threat to Luffy, he was beaten down by the rookie protagonist.
This was the last fans heard of Krieg, whose dreams of conquering the Grand Line seemed to have been crushed. His inability to adapt to stronger opponents makes him a forgettable threat in the grander scheme of One Piece.
4) Alvida
Alvida is a memorable character in One Piece because she was the very first antagonist Luffy fought. Of course, this meant little as she faced quick defeat against the easygoing protagonist. Following this, she allied with Buggy and helped him run their alliance.
Alvida is a character no one takes seriously because of her lack of power and proper fighting skills. Her Devil Fruit, the Sube Sube no Mi, only changed her figure and made her pretty but never actually bestowed strength. Once taken in by the Cross Guild, she serves Crocodile and Mihawk, realizing Buggy’s incompetence.
Hence, her depiction as a “nuisance” to Luffy in the earlier stages and relative irrelevance towards the latter half of the series made her an unserious pirate.
